
UNI Dominates Tennessee Tech, 50-7

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa – The University of Northern Iowa football team dominated Tennessee Tech today inside the UNI-Dome, defeating the Golden Eagles 50-7. The Panthers improved their overall record to 2-2, heading into Missouri Valley Football Conference play.
Junior placekicker scored a career-high 20 points, breaking the school record for points in a game by a kicker. Sawyer Kollmorgen finished the game 14-21-0 for 200 yards and three touchdowns, while Brett LeMaster, Kevin Vereen Jr. and Braden Lehman all scored receiving touchdowns. David Johnson led the Panthers on the ground with 142 yards.
On the defensive side of the ball, Jake Farley finished with six tackles, including 1.5 tackles for a loss of three yards. Karter Schult finished with four tackles and a career-high two sacks. Deiondre' Hall had another athletic showing for the Panther defense, coming away with an interception and a 32-yard return for a touchdown.
The Panthers jumped on the board with Schmadeke knocking in a 30-yard field goal with 11:08 left to play in the first quarter. UNI moved the chains quickly on the scoring play, burning 3:52 off the clock for 10 plays and 62 yards.
Schmadeke then increased the UNI lead to six points later in the quarter with his second field goal of the game. The junior converted on a 25-yarder with 1:27 left in the first quarter, ending a 3:36 long drive for nine plays and 51 yards.
Lehman notched his first touchdown of the season to open the second quarter scoring for the Panthers, linking up with Kollmorgen for a wide-open 12-yard receiving touchdown. The drive took 2:37 off the clock for five plays and 50 yards.
The Panther defense added to the UNI score line with 9:11 left in the first half when Hall pulled down a huge interception, returning it 32 yards into the end zone to give UNI a 20-0 lead. It was the first defensive score for the Panthers this season.
UNI scored its third touchdown of the quarter when LeMaster grabbed an 11-yard reception when Kollmorgen found him open in the corner for his first score of the season. The drive lasted 1:53 for six plays and 44 yards, putting UNI up 27-0 with 5:05 left on the clock.
UNI continued their momentum, picking up another touchdown with 2:23 on the clock in the second quarter. Vereen Jr. scored his fourth touchdown of the season, grabbing an over the shoulder catch for 25 yards. The score ended a 59 second drive for three plays and 51 yards to put UNI up 34-0 to end the first half.
On the second half opening kickoff from the Golden Eagles, Makinton Dorleant was able to force a fumble with Nate Shaw recovering the ball, setting up the next scoring drive for the Panthers. Brion Carnes kept the ball off the snap, rushing into the end zone for a seven-yard gain. The drive took 1:38 off the clock for four plays and 24 yards to give UNI a 41-0 lead.
Schmadeke added six points for the Panthers in the third quarter with two more field goals. He finished with a 38-yard field goal with 8:36 left in the quarter, ending a six play, 49-yard drive. His second field goal of the quarter came at the 2:23 mark when he hit a 32-yarder through the uprights to give UNI a 47-0 lead.
The Golden Eagles jumped on the scoreboard late in the third quarter when Radir Annoor broke free for an 84-yard rushing touchdown to make the score 47-7. The drive only took 18 seconds off the clock for the 84-yard play.
With 9:00 left in the game, Schmadeke scored his 20th point by hitting a 28-yard field goal, setting a new school record for points in a game by a kicker. The drive shaved off 4:24 from the game for seven plays and 22 yards to give UNI a 50-7 win.
The Panthers will return to action with their MVFC opener against Indiana State on Saturday, Oct. 4. The game will kick-off at 2 p.m. CT in Terre Haute, Ind.
Post-Game Notes vs. Tennessee Tech

- Michael Schmadeke set a new school record for points in a game by a kicker with his 20-point performance against Tennessee Tech. The previous record was 18, set by Brian Mitchell (vs. Idaho, 1991). He also tied the school record in field goals made with five. The record was originally set by Mitchell against Idaho in 1991, and was done against in 2002 by MacKenzie Hoambrecker vs. Cal Poly and vs. Youngstown State.
- The Golden Eagles 92 total yards is the fewest allowed since UNI held Missouri State to a total of 81 yards on Nov. 8, 2008. Tennessee Tech's two first downs was also the lowest amount of first downs achieved against the Panther defense.
- Tight end Braden Lehman scored his first touchdown of the season and his second-career score against Tennessee Tech. The junior was found open on the outside for a quick 12-yard receiving touchdown to put UNI up 13-0 in the second quarter.
- True freshman wide receiver Daurice Fountain caught his first career pass as a Panther against Tennessee Tech. The Madison, Wis. native caught a 12-yard pass in the second quarter.
- Kevin Vereen Jr. scored his fourth touchdown of the season against Tennessee Tech, picking up a 25-yard reception in the second quarter. He has now scored in four consecutive games. The school record for consecutive games with a receiving touchdown in seven (Dedric Ward, 1994-95; Eddie Berlin, 2000).
- UNI put up a season-high four touchdowns in the second quarter against Tennessee Tech. UNI has now outscored their opponents 67-20 in the second quarter this season. The Panthers' 28 points in the second quarter is the second highest second quarter total in school history. UNI scored 35 points in the second quarter against South Dakota in a 66-7 win on Sept. 9, 2009.
- David Johnson finished the game against Tennessee Tech with 142 yards on the ground and one reception for four yards, giving him 146 all-purpose yards. He has now moved into fourth all-time at UNI in career all-purpose yards with 5,012.
- Sawyer Kollmorgen has thrown for 100 or more yards in 15 straight games for the Panthers after his 200-yard performance against Tennessee Tech. It also marks his 16th career game with 200 or more yards.
- Brett LeMaster scored his first touchdown since Nov. 17, 2012 when he finished with 106 yards and one touchdown against Missouri State. LeMaster finished the game against the Golden Eagles with 77 yards and his second quarter touchdown.
