Indiana State Edges UNI, 20-19

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – The University of Northern Iowa football team fell 20-19 to the Indiana State Sycamores today in a close battle that went down to the last play of the game. UNI is now 2-3 overall.
The Panthers took a 19-14 lead early in the fourth quarter, but Indiana State scored with 2:12 on the clock off a 38-yard pass to Gary Owens to take a 20-19 lead. Junior Michael Schmadeke attempted a 53-yard field goal with less than 30 seconds to play, but was unable to make it in.
UNI was led by David Johnson's 127 rushing yards. Sawyer Kollmorgen finished the game 16-35-1 for 158 yards and a rushing touchdown while Brett LeMaster added 57 through the air. Max Busher led the Panthers in tackles with 14 while Ronelle McNeil finished with eight tackles and two sacks.
The Sycamores struck first, taking a 7-0 lead with 7:45 left in the first quarter. Buck Logan found the end zone after a 17-yard rush, ending a nine play, 78 yard drive that took 4:18 off the clock.
Indiana State extended its lead later in the same quarter after Mike Perish scored a one-yard rushing touchdown with 3:15 left on the clock. The drive burned 3:25 off the clock for seven plays and 67 yards, giving them a 14-0 lead.
UNI answered with a score of its own with 6:48 left to play in the second quarter when Kollmorgen leaped over the pile and into the end zone. The touchdown cut the Indiana State lead to 14-7, taking 4:50 off the clock for 11 plays and 87 yards.
Schmadeke made it a four-point game late in the half after knocking in a 21-yarder, making the score 14-10 with 1:54 left in the second quarter. The drive lasted 3:47 for eight plays and 43 yards.
After a huge interception from Deiondre' Hall, the Panthers drove down field again, putting Schmadeke in range for another field goal. The junior converted on a 48-yard field goal, heading into the wind, to cut the INS lead to 14-13 with 1:02 on the clock.
UNI took the lead in the third quarter when Schmadeke kicked in his third field goal of the game. His 30-yarder gave the Panthers a 16-14 lead with 9:46 on the clock, ending a 3:04 drive for eight plays and 36 yards.
The Waterloo, Iowa native continued his scoring streak with a fourth field goal in the final quarter. He was able to send a 31-yarder through the uprights to give UNI a 19-14 lead with 14:48 left in the game, ending a 3:34 drive for eight plays and 66 yards.
With 2:12 left in the game, Sycamore quarterback Chris O'Leary found Gary Owens for a 38-yard receiving touchdown for the 20-19 win.
UNI will return to action on Saturday, Oct. 11 when they head to Vermillion, S.D. to take on the South Dakota Coyotes. The game is set to kickoff at 4 p.m.
