Panthers Shut Out Bulldogs, 1-0

DES MOINES, IA -- The University of Northern Iowa women's soccer team was in the state's capital on Sunday evening for a 6 p.m. match against conference rival Drake. The Panthers scored a 1-0 shutout of the Bulldogs.
Head Coach James Price's team got off to a quick start against the Bulldogs. Sophomore Maddie Welch got clear for a shot in the 11th minute but was blocked by a Drake defender. The shot was Welch's 9th of the season.
The Bulldog's quickly responded. Brittany Schuling and Kayla Armstrong fired shots that went high and wide during the 15th and 17th minutes.
The Panthers subbed senior Grace Schield for Charlotte Jones in the 23rd minute. In the 25th minute sophomore Brady Clark replaced Senior Claire Clark. Three minutes after entering the game Brady Clark kicked a corner to sophomore Annie Dale who headed the ball past Bulldog goalkeeper Andrea Swanson for her second goal of the season. The assist was Brady Clark's second of the season.
Mary Brandt entered in the 35th minute for Dale. After the substitution the Panthers had their second corner kick in the 36th. Brady Clark nearly had another assist but sophomore Sarah McHugh's shot went just high of the goal post.
Drake began to take the momentum back, recording three shots during the 37th, 38th and 40th minutes. Paige Dusek, Ann Hoover and Brittany Schuling missed wide, high and wide respectively.
The Bulldogs grabbed the first bit of momentum of the second half when Brittany Schuling's corner kick in the 56th minute led to a close call for the Panthers. Drake's Kayla Armstrong got free for a shot attempt in the 57th that was blocked by UNI. Shortly after another corner kick by Schuling in the 59th minute Panthers coach James Price subbed Brady Clark and Grace Schield for Claire Clark and Charlotte Jones.
Seven minutes after the substitutions in the 66th junior midfielder Caitlyn Fuller got past the Bulldog defense, however Bulldogs goalkeeper Andrea Swanson recorded her first save on the attempt.
Mary Brandt subbed in for Brady Clark during the 68th. Six minutes later UNI goalkeeper Nicole Postel recorded her first save of the match when Drake's Charlie Maxwell got loose for a shot.
Charlotte Jones checked back in during the 81st minute for Claire Clark. Just three minutes after re-entering Jones launched a shot that was turned away by Bulldogs goalkeeper Andrea Swanson for her second of the match.
The Bulldogs made one more push for a goal in the last five minutes. Brittany Schuling sent a corner kick into the box in the 85th minute and shortly after the corner Paige Dusek launched her third shot of the match but it was again turned away by Panthers goalkeeper Nicole Postel.
Coach James Price sent one last group of subs in during the 87th. Subbing Claire Clark and Mary Brandt for Charlotte Jones and Grace Schield. Drake's Rhian Pritchard got the Bulldogs last crack at tying the game in the 87th. Pritchard's attempt was saved by UNI goalkeeper Postel -- good for her second save of the game and second victory of the season.
UNI totaled five shots and two corner kicks. Drake tallied nine shots and seven corner kicks for the match. Drake committed eight fouls. UNI committed seven.
Northern Iowa will be back in action on Thursday, October 17th when they face-off against Illinois State at home. The conference matchup is scheduled to kick at 4 p.m.

- Sophomore Maddie Welch has two goals on four shots her last four games.
- Annie Dale's goal against Drake was her second goal in her last four matches. Dale has five shot attempts in her last four games.
- Sophomore Brady Clark has two assists in her last four games. Clark has fired 3 shots in the last four contests.
- The Panthers 1-0 shutout of the Bulldogs marked the seventh time this season the match has been decided by one goal.
