CEDAR FALLS, Iowa -- The Illinois State Redbirds traveled to Cedar Falls for an afternoon match against the Panthers on Thursday afternoon. The Redbirds were able to grab the momentum away from UNI early by forcing the attack and being in the UNI zone with a steady stream of corner kicks during the first half.
Despite not scoring on any of their corner kicks, the Redbirds scored their first goal in the 17th minute when freshman Hannah Leinart received a through ball and used a dribble move to beat the Panthers' defender and goalkeeper for her sixth goal of the season.
Eleven minutes later in the 28th, the Redbirds netted their second goal. Hannah Leinart touched a pass to sophomore Rachel Tejada, who beat the keeper for her conference leading 10th goal of the season.
Fighting from behind in the second half the Panthers were able to fire a few shots. Maddie Welch, Maggie Riley and Annie Dale each recorded one shot during the early parts of the second half. Charlotte Jones and Welch each had one shot attempt during the first half. However the Panthers were unable to put their attempts on goal.
The Redbirds closed out the game with a flurry of goals in a matter of five minutes. Hannah Leinart, Rachel Tejada and Kyla Cross each scored a goal during the 81st, 83rd and 85th minute respectively.
