Hosch Sets Meet Record with 800m Title at Tom Botts Invitational

COLUMBIA, Mo. - The University of Northern Iowa men's and women's track & field teams continued their steady progress Saturday afternoon at the Tom Botts Invitational hosted by Missouri. In total, the Panthers claimed 12 top-three finishes and UNI's throwers posted two more performances in the school's all-time top five lists. Senior Holli Hosch headlined the effort with a meet record in the 800m run.
Women's Highlights
Defending Missouri Valley Conference champion Holli Hosch set a new meet record on her way to a victory in the 800m run, clocking in at 2:08.51 in her first outdoor 800m race of the season. Based on times entering this weekend, Hosch now ranks No. 13 in the West Region in the event.
Traci Harms became UNI's third woman ever to top the 180-foot mark in the hammer throw, as she took third place with a personal-best toss of 180-00 (54.88m). Senior Rachel VanderHolt claimed fourth place in the javelin with a throw of 131-0 (39.94m).
The women's 4x100m relay team of Lindsay Gierke, Sam Cameron, Ellen Kindelsperger and Michaela Brungardt claimed a third-place finish with a time of 47.92.
Brungardt, Hosch, Kindelsperger and Cameron teamed up for a third-place finish in the 4x400m relay, clocking in at 3:53.70. Individually, Brungardt placed fifth in the 400m at 57.06, while Kindelsperger took seventh place in 57.53.
Sophomore Hayley Thomas was the Panthers' top finisher in the 1,500m, taking sixth place in a personal-best 4:45.19.
Senior Holly Tjaden placed eighth in the 3,000m with a time of 10:41.48. Jill Lageschulte was 10th in 10:45.52.
Men's Highlights
Junior Aaron Stockstell trimmed more than a second off his Missouri Valley Conference-leading time in the 800m, as he led a UNI sweep of the top three places. Stockstell won the event in 1:50.35, junior Brady Fritz was second in 1:52.21 and sophomore Thibault Vandenabeele was third in 1:52.43. Freshman Chad Rutledge ran a personal-best 1:53.36 for seventh place.
Based on times entering this weekend, Stockstell is now No. 18 in the West Region.
Sophomore Brett Egan took second place in the 3,000m. His time of 8:37.24 ranks him as the third-fastest all-time at UNI.
The quartet of Derek Kramer, Carlos Anderson, Tim Johnson and Jarred Herring took second in the 4x100m relay, crossing the line in 41.06 for a new season-best time.
Channing Puls and Chris Henely both recorded personal-best times to place third and fourth, respectively, in the 110m hurdles. Puls clocked in at 14.61 with Henely close behind at 14.66.
UNI also took third and fourth in the high jump where Travis Leuer and Thomas Larson each cleared 6-08.75 (2.05m).
The Panthers placed two in the 100m dash, as sophomore Carlos Anderson took third place in 10.54 and freshman Derek Kramer took seventh in 10.90.
Freshman Adam McDonnell took over fifth-place all-time at UNI in the javelin with his throw of 195-03 (59.52m), earning him a fifth-place finish.
Herring ran 21.78 in the 200m dash to claim fifth place.
Freshman Ryan Newtoff was ninth in the 400m hurdles, finishing in 54.13.
UNI will return to action on Apr. 15-16 at the Jim Duncan Invitational hosted by Drake.
