
Olson Crowned 1-Meter Dive Champion

The University of Northern Iowa sits in fifth place after day one of the State Farm Missouri Valley Conference Championships. The Panthers were led by sophomore Bethany Olson, who took first in the 1-meter dive. After the first day of competition, the Panthers have a team score of 115.5 points.
After scoring 247.75 points in the prelims, Olson was ranked second going into the 1-meter dive finals. Olson accumulated 265.75 points in the finals to take the top-spot for the Panthers. The last time a Panther has taken first in the MVC championships was in 2003, when Erica Uthoff-Schmueker won the 100 breaststroke.
Chelsea Hartman finished the 500 freestyle in tenth place. She finished with a time of 5:03.04. April Mangrich (5:16.71), Jody Petersen (5:21.13) and Kathleen Varner (5:27.14) rounded out the competition taken 18th, 19th and 20th, respectively. All the times were season-best times for the swimmers.
Abby Girard with a time of 2:09.67. Teammate Josie Itzen finished the 200 IM in a time of 2:11.13, taking 13th place. Ashley Mangrich was shortly behind with a time of 2:14.81, taking 20th.
Stephanie Frederick took fourth in the 50 freestyle. She finished the race with a time of 24.02. With that time, Frederick now sits in second place on the all-time best list at UNI. Rebecca Ortmann finished in 24.75, good enough for a 12th place finish.
The 400 medley relay team clocked in with a time of 3:52.41, shattering the old school record of 3:58.37. The relay team was lead by Jamie Pearson and Frederick.
The 200 freestyle relay team finished the night with a time of 1.37.37. The team of Frederick, MacKenzie Smith, Itzen and Ortmann finished in fifth.
The Panthers return to action tomorrow, with the 400 IM prelims. Competition will begin at 11 a.m., followed by finals set to begin at 6 p.m.
