
Panthers Win at Southern Illinois 68-41 For 12th Straight Win

Four Panthers (20-5, 13-1 MVC) scored in double figures, and nine Panthers played double-digit minutes. Jacqui Kalin led UNI with 18 points, 15 of them scored in the first half, and Amber Kirschbaum added 14. Lizzie Boeck finished with 13 points, seven rebounds and three assists, and Rachel Madrigal scored eight points in the second half to finish with 12 points and three steals.
CiCi Shannon led SIU (2-22, 0-13 MVC) with 10 points and seven rebounds.
The Salukis scored first, but the Panthers took advantage of five SIU turnovers in a span of 2:04 to go on an 8-0 run and build an 8-2 lead with 15:43 left in the first half.
SIU ended the UNI run with a basket from CiCi Shannon, but Boeck scored on the block and Kalin knocked down a three from the right baseline to give UNI a 15-4 advantage with 13:45 on the clock.
With UNI leading 17-10, SIU scored five straight points to pull within two, 17-15 at 10:30. The teams traded baskets, with the Panther lead staying between two and four points, until the UNI defense held SIU scoreless for more than 5 minutes to go on a 12-0 run and build a 37-21 lead with 1:36 left in the half.
Jordyn Courier hit a three to end the UNI run. Mercedees Morgan scored with 1:05 on the clock to bring the halftime score to 37-24.
Amber Kirschbaum gave UNI a 20-point lead when she knocked down a short jumper at 14:38 that gave UNI a 49-29 lead.
SIU cut the UNI lead to 17, but the Panthers scored the next nine points to build a 58-32 lead with 9:54 to play.
The Panthers led by at least 23 points and as many as 28 on the way to the victory.
UNI shot 26-of-56 (46.4 percent) from the floor, including 4-of-15 (26.7 percent) from behind the arc. The Panthers were 12-of-17 (70.6 percent) from the free-throw line.
The Salukis shot 16-of-46 (34.8 percent) from the floor, including 4-of-14 (28.6 percent) from three-point range. SIU finished 5-of-8 (62.5 percent) from the free-throw line.
The Panthers turned SIU's 27 turnovers into 19 points. The Salukis converted UNI's 18 turnovers into six points.
UNI held a 36-30 rebounding advantage.
The Panthers join the 1981-82 and 2004-05 seasons as the only previous UNI teams to win 20 or more games. UNI's 13 conference wins match the school record set by the 2004-05 team.
