Panthers Come Up Short Against Illinois State

NORMAL, Ill. – The University of Northern Iowa swimming and diving team fell to the Illinois State Redbirds, 143.5 – 92.5. The Panthers finished the meet with two first place spots.
Diver Bethany Olson continued to perform well on the boards, as she took first in the 3-meter dive. She finished the 3-meter dive with a score of 256.58. Olson also took third in the 1-meter dive, finishing with a total of 236.93 points.
Freshman Rebecca Ortmann finished the 100 freestyle in the top-spot. She finished with a time of 55.69. Teammate Josie Itzen followed with a time of 56.18 to take the runner-up spot. Ortmann also took the runner-up spot in the 200 freestyle, finishing in second with a time of 1:59.98. Itzen took second in the 400 IM, clocking with a time of 5:45.00.
MacKenzie Smith finished the 50-freestyle in 25.72. She took the runner-up spot with her time.
Chelsea Hartman took second in the 1000 freestyle. She finished the race with a time of 10:40.43. Hartman also took second in the 500 freestyle. She clocked in with a time of 5:14.05.
Jaime Pearson, clocking in with a time of 1:01.00, took second in the 100 butterfly.
Natalie Johnson and Kelly McCullough took second and third in the 100 backstroke. Johnson finished in 1:00.96, followed by McCullough in 1:02.72.
To finish off the meet, Ashley Mangrich took second in the 100 breaststroke. She swam a season-best time of 1:09.22.
The 200 medley relay team of Natalie Johnson, Caryn Knight, Jaime Pearson and MacKenzie Smith took second place for the meet. The quartet finished with a time of 1:52.84.
Rebecca Ortmann, MacKenzie Smith, Natalie Johnson and Josie Itzen join forces to take second in the 200 freestyle relay. They finished with a time of 1:41.58.
The Panthers will finish off the regular season this Friday, Feb. 4 before competing in the MVC Championships. The meet on Friday is in Iowa City against Iowa and Western Illinois. The first event is set to kick off at 6 p.m.
