“I think the kids did a terrific job today,” noted UNI head track & field coach Dan Steele. “I love the intensity and team cohesion I'm seeing, and the hard work is starting to pay off. The women continue to show considerable improvements and the men are shaping into a championship-caliber team. I think this was a great first meet.”
Senior Holli Hosch shattered the school record in the 600-meter run, finishing in a time of 1:31.94 to break Nikki Nelson's previous record from 2000 by 1.58 seconds. Hosch is coming off a 2010 season in which she set the school's outdoor 800m record and qualified for the NCAA Outdoor Championships.
Sophomore Carlos Anderson pulled away from the field to take the 60-meter dash title in 6.78 seconds in his first track meet as a Panther. That performance ties him for fifth-place all-time at UNI in the 60m dash.
UNI swept the pole vault, with junior Jenna Wexter taking the women's title and Daniel Gooris winning the men's event. Wexter cleared 12-06 (3.81m) and nearly broke her own school record with an attempt at 12-09. Gooris vaulted 16-10.75 (5.15m) to top the men's field.
Junior Travis Leuer cleared 7-00.50 (2.15m) in the high jump to place second. Iowa Central's James White jumped 7-02.50 (2.20) to win the event.
UNI also received a strong showing in the 300-meter dash, placing first in both the men's and women's races. Senior Bryan Collins clocked in at 35.29 to take first place and move into fifth-place all time at UNI in the 300m dash. Sophomore Sam Cameron won the women's 300m dash in 40.32 – the second-fastest time in school history. Senior Ellen Kindelsperger took third place in 41.44 and moved into fifth-place all-time.
The Panthers had a field day in the throwing events, capturing all four titles up for grabs. Junior Traci Harms won the women's weight throw (57-08.25) and shot put (42-09.50), with her weight throw mark good enough for fifth all-time at UNI.
Junior Tanner Hurt took the men's weight throw title with a throw of 57-02 and junior Justin Romero won the shot put with a mark of 54-02. UNI claimed the top four places in the men's shot put with Jordan Williams, Nic Toben and Tanner Hurt taking second, third and fourth, respectively.
Junior Beau Dielschneider won the 600m run, finishing in a time of 1:20.42. Junior Aaron Stockstell made his UNI debut, taking second place in the 600m and running a leg on the Panthers' winning 4x400 relay squad.
Other UNI champions include Lindsay Gierke (60m hurdles), Brady Fritz (1000m), Justin Bartels (800m), Emily Wandling (long jump), Johanna Smith and Lauren Lindaman (high jump), and both the men's and women's 4x400-meter relay teams.
UNI will return to action at the Jack Johnson Classic in
