Panthers Open Outdoor Season at Tom Botts Invitational

COLUMBIA, Mo. – The University of Northern Iowa track and field teams took part in the first day of outdoor competition for the 2010 outdoor season at the Tom Botts Invitational Friday, hosted by the University of Missouri.
A number of events were postponed to Saturday due to inclement weather in the Columbia area, however the women's shot put, men's long jump and men's discus throw were able to finish before the weather delayed the action.
Alvin Cole took first place in the men's long jump with a leap of 21-09. Rozle Bucalo finished in fourth, jumping 21-02 ½.
Allen Weeks took the top honor in the men's discus throw, heaving 161-10. Jordan Williams, Tanner Hurt and Justin Romero finished in sixth, seventh and eighth place, respectively.
Alex Mark finished in fifth place in the men's 3000-meter steeplechase, clocking in at 9:45.40.
On the women's side, freshman Kaitlin Kromminga in eighth.
Action at the Tom Botts Invitational will resume tomorrow, Saturday, April 3, at 10 a.m.
In other action, Olimpia Nowak and Daniel Gooris took part in the Texas Relays multi-event competition hosted by the University of Texas.
Nowak took fifth place in the women's heptathlon, finishing with 5,325 points, a career-best for the sophomore. Nowak's mark puts her atop the Valley standings.
Gooris, taking part in his first collegiate decathlon, finished in eighth place with 7,015 points.
