
Panthers Fall Short Against Illinois State, 194-106

CEDAR FALLS, IA-The UNI swimming and diving team took to the water to start off the 2009-10 season. The Panthers fell short to top-ranked Illinois State in the Missouri Valley Conference. The Redbirds topped the Panthers 194-106.
Top performances for the Panthers include Abby Girard in the 100 backstroke and the 200-yard freestyle relay team.
Hartman took the top-spot in both the 1,000 and 500 freestyle. Her times were 10:24.13 and 5:08.93, respectively.
Abby Girard took the top-spot in the 100-yard backstroke, with a time of 1:00.75. She also took third in the 200-yard backstroke clocking in at 2:11.88, just a second off the second place swimmer from Illinois State.
The 200-yard freestyle relay team pulled in a victory for the Panthers. The quartet of Abby Girard swam for a time of 1:41.55. The Panthers took the top-five spots in the 200-yard freestyle, not allowing the Redbirds to snatch any points for the event.
With a time of 1:52.27, Abby Girard, Ashley Mangrich, Rickert and Frederick were able to grab the runner-up spot in the 200-yard medley relay.
Josie Itzen, with a time of 1:59.18, took runner-up in the 200-yard freestyle. Itzen also finished second in the 100-yard freestyle (55.25) and 200-yard IM (2:15.64). Teammate Ashley Mangrich also grabbed the runner-up spot for the 100-yard breaststroke. She came in with a time of 1:10.22.
In the 50-yard freestyle, Rickert and Frederick clocked in with times of 25.33 and 25.66, coming in second and third, respectively. Rickert, with a time of 1:01.20, also took second in the 100-yard butterfly.
New to the school, the divers took to the boards for the first time ever in school history. Lauren Nelson preformed well for the Panthers. Olson grabbed the runner-up spot in both the 1-meter and 3-meter dives. Nelson took third in the 3-meter dive and fifth in the 1-meter dive. Olson now holds the school record for both the 1-meter and 3-meter dives.
The Panthers next action will come on Nov. 6, when they head to Vermillion, SD to take on the Coyotes of University of South Dakota.
