
Panther Swimmers Top South Dakota, Fall to Kansas

LAWRENCE, Kan. – The University of Northern Iowa women's swimming team topped South Dakota 160-127 before falling to Kansas 191-87 in Lawrence, Kan. Saturday afternoon in a double-dual match.
The Panthers earned two first place finishes, with the quartet of Maggie Rickert, Ashley Hunter, Abby Girard earning the top spot in the 400 yard freestyle. Chelsea Hartman also earned a first place finish, taking the top spot 1000 yard freestyle in a time of 10:29.12. In the 500 yard freestyle, Hartman took runner-up honors, finishing in 5:10.09.
Girard, Rickert, Ashley Mangrich and Hunter took fourth place in the 400 yard medley relay, clocking in at 4:05.50. Kelly McCullough took fourth place in the 1000 yard freestyle for the Panthers, finishing in 10:56.78.
In the 200 yard freestyle, Ashley Hunter was the top swimmer for the Panthers, taking fifth place and finishing in 1:58.80. Josie Itzen finished closely behind in sixth place, with a final time of 2:01.80.
In the 100 yard backstroke, Girard took third place, clocking a season-best 1:00.39. In the 100 yard breaststroke, the trio of Mangrich, Caitlin Krengel and Meagan Miller took fifth through eighth place respectively.
Rickert took sixth place in the 50 yard freestyle, finishing in 25.40, a season-best time. Alexa Armstrong took seventh place, clocking in at 26.22 while Jean Matzen finished in eighth place with a time of 26.44.
In the 100 freestyle, Hunter took fifth place, finishing in a season-best time of 54.96. Hartman finished in seventh place with a final time of 56.31.
Abby Moses finished fourth in the 200 yard backstroke, taking two full seconds off her previous season-best time of 2:13.78 to finish in 2:11.62. Girard finished in sixth place, clocking in at 2:13.10.
Krengel and Mangrich took third and fourth place in the 200 yard breaststroke, with Krengel finishing in season-best 2:31.38 and Mangrich recording a time of 2:32.46.
The Panthers return to action Jan. 30 when they host Minnesota State-Mankato. The meet is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m.
