Panthers Provisionally Qualify Two for NCAA Championships

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa - Both the University of Northern Iowa men's and women's track teams opened the 2009 indoor season by hosting the Panther Open in the UNI-Dome. In the first meet of the 2009 indoor season, the Panthers provisionally qualified two high jumpers for the NCAA Indoor Championships, both Ehi Oamen and Travis Leuer met the provisional qualifying mark by clearing 7-00.25 feet.
Tyler Mulder provided excitement for the UNI-Dome crowd by breaking the previous UNI-Dome and UNI school record in the 1000 meters, clocking in at 2:25.32. Mulder broke Dorian Ulrey's previous mark of 2:26.19 set in 2007 for the UNI school record, along with topping Missouri's Neveille Miller's 2:26.14 UNI-Dome record set in 2005.
Overall, the Panther men earned six first place finishes, while also taking 10 runner-up spots.
The Panthers notched the top five spots in the men's 1000 meter run, with freshman Andrew Perkins finishing second in 2:30.02. Corbin Miller took the third spot in 2:32.23 and Brady Fritz finished fourth in 2:33.20. Aaron Vosberg placed fifth, clocking in at 2:34.89.
Lucas Cook took the top spot in the men's weight throw, tossing 17.16 meters. Adam Pinckney took third for the Panthers, heaving 15.60 meters.
Freshman Phil Hanson, Mike Beese and Sam Kranz all also cleared the 4.90 mark, and took second through fourth place respectively due to number of successful attempts.
Rupert Bannermann-Thompson competed unattached for UNI, taking first place in the men's 60 meter dash with a time of 6.91. Freshman Giorgio Giurdanella took second place, finishing in 6.93.
In the 400 meter dash, Dennis Hammel took the runner-up spot, clocking in at 50.46. Pete Larson took fourth place for the Panthers, finishing in 51.24. In the men's 600 meter run, the Panthers took the top four spots, with three-time All-American Mike Craddick finished third and fourth respectively clocking in at 1:22.40 and 1:23.47.
WOMEN'S RESULTS
Overall, the Panther women took home three first place finishes in addition to 10 runner-up placings. Sarah Harms took two first place honors, coming in the women's weight throw and shot put.
Sophomore Ali Selenke took second place in the women's 400 meter dash, clocking in at 1:00.28. In the 600 meter dash, the Panthers took second through fifth place, with freshman Amanda Brandt finished fourth in 1:40:55. Freshman Shawn Shaddox took fifth place for the Panthers in a time of 1:42.71.
Senior Caedryn Schrunk took second in the women's 1000 meter run, clocking in at 3:02.21. Freshman Carly Olsen took third, finishing in 3:02.92 while Jillian Lageschulte finished fourth in 3:09.33.
In the 60 meter hurdles, the Panthers took second through fifth place with Heather Kessler took third place with a time of 9.40. Jess Hale and Brittany Korell finished fourth and fifth respectively with times of 9.57 and 9.66.
Vanderholt also took runner-up honors in the high jump, clearing 1.68 meters. In the pole vault, Jamie Wieck took second in the women's long jump, jumping 5.56 meters.
In the shot put, the sister duo of Sarah and Courtney Landers took third in the weight throw, tossing 15.98 meters.
The Panthers return to action Saturday, Jan. 24, traveling to Iowa State to take part in the Iowa State Open.
