UNI Claims 10 Events At Panther Open

The Panthers enjoyed strong performances in nearly every specialty on the track, sweeping the 4x400 meter relays and the men's and women's 1,000 meters. UNI also picked up wins in the women's 60-meter dash, the women's 60 hurdles, the women's 600 meters, the men's 800 meters and the women's weight throw.
The Panthers swept the top two spots in the men's 4x400, with the squad of Cory Goos, Dennis Hammel winning in 3:17.91. In their first action of the season, Goos posted a split of 48.96, while Grenko led off with a 49.72, Roberts clocked in at 49.67 and Hammel anchored the winning effort in 49.56.
The UNI "B" team of Tyler Mulder, Greg Offerman and Pete Larson took second in 3:18.40. After Reid led off with a 48.70-second split, Mulder followed by turning his 400 in 48.39. Offerman posted a 49.94, with Larson running 50.91 on the anchor leg.
Freshman Beau Dielschneider was impressive in his first competition as a Panther, turning a split of 48.64 on the second leg of UNI's unattached relay that finished sixth.
In the women's 4x400 relay, the quartet of Ellen Kindelsperger, Jamie Hutchinson, Amy Bagge and Lauren Carruthers won in 3:52.57. Hutchinson, on the second leg, and Carruthers, who anchored the race, each posted sub-58-second splits, led by
The Panthers' "B" squad of Regina Reinig was third in 4:02.28. Simon (59.73) and Hosch (59.59) each clocked in below the minute mark.
Jarrel Anderson, the Panthers' school-record holder in the 60 hurdles, won the event with a clocking of 8.15 as an unattached competitor. Heather Kessler was third in 9.27, while Rachel VanderHolt took fifth in 9.31.
Wesley Williams, competing unattached, took the men's 60-meter dash in 6.99, while senior Meredith Simon completed a UNI sweep with a 7.79-second winning effort in the women's race. Blair Runde was second in 7.86.
Sophomore Mike Craddick took the top spot in the men's 800, clocking in at 1:56.06 to finish ahead of teammates Grenko (third), Goos (fourth) and Offerman (fifth).
Another UNI sophomore, Dorian Ulrey, who was the nation's top freshman in the mile a season ago, led a dominant effort in the 1,000 meters that saw the Panthers claim six of the top 10 spots. Ulrey won the race in 2:27.48, followed by teammates Mulder (2:28.74) and Tim Fulton (2:29.84).
Hutchinson, a senior who missed the 2007 outdoor season due to injury, returned to the track with a win in the women's 1,000 meters, clocking in at 2:58.16. Teammate Regina Reinig (sixth) just behind.
Senior Lauren Carruthers took the title in the women's 600 meters with a time of 1:36.26, holding off UNI freshman Ellen Kindelsperger, who took runner-up honors in 1:38.02. Simon, also a senior, took runner-up honors in the women's 200 meters in 25.59.
The distance trio of Caedryn Schrunk (second), Andrea Wacker (fourth) led the charge for UNI in the women's mile, while Chris Lawson and Mike Clancy took home third and fourth, respectively, in the men's race.
In the field events, senior Rachel Jansen and junior Sarah Harms swept the top two spots in the women's weight throw. Jansen, already a provisional qualifier for the NCAA Indoor Championships, tossed 60 feet, 7 1/4 inches to take the victory.
Sophomore Dani Stipe led a 1-2 finish for the Panthers in the women's long jump, leaping 18-2 1/2 to finish ahead of teammate Runde, who was second with a jump of 17-11 1/2. Jamie Wieck in fifth.
UNI's Rozle Bucalo was second in the men's long jump with a leap of 22-7, while sophomore Ehi Oamen was third in the high jump after clearing 6-9 3/4. Julian Morris, making his first appearance for UNI since transferring from
In the women's long jump, defending Missouri Valley Conference champion Crystal Hanson was second after clearing 5-8, while VanderHolt took fourth by clearing the 5-6 mark.

Cepeda backed up his finish in the pole vault with a third-place effort in the shot put, throwing 47-8. Teammate Adam Pinckney was fourth with an effort of 47-3 1/2, followed by UNI associate head coach Travis Geopfert, who was fifth with a throw of 46-3 1/2, competing unattached.
