The University of Northern Iowa women's swimming went neck and neck with the University of South Dakota until the score was evened out by diving. As the Panthers swam hard, but gained zero points for having no divers, the Coyotes earned 26 points just from divers. The Panthers won six of 16 events, two of which broke into the UNI all-time top-five times and one setting a new standard in UNI women's swimming.
Freshman Abby Girard (Cedar Falls, Iowa/Cedar Falls) made her way onto the top times wall in the Wellness and Recreation Pool today, shattering the 100-yard back finishing time set in 2002 with a first place finishing time of 59.47. Girard also claimed first in the 200-yard back with a finishing time of 2:10.51, earning her the number two spot in the UNI women's all-time top-five. Even though Girard placed second in the 200-yard IM, she still claimed her spot as number five in the UNI women's all-time top-five. She earned a total of 22 individual points for the Panthers.
Another freshman also had a great meet, earning first in two events. Freshman Amanda Firman (Cedar Falls, Iowa/Cedar Falls) raced into first in the 50-yard free, 25.15 and the 100-yard free, 55.37. Other winners of the night were sophomore Katie Maloy (Auburn, Ind./R. Nelson Snider) with a time of 11:04.18 in the 1000-yard free and sophomore Ashley Hunter (Overland Park, Kan./Blue Valley North) with a time of 2:01.35 in the 200-yard free.
The swim team travels to Lawrence, Kan. Friday (Nov. 3) to face off with the Jayhawks of Kansas. The meet starts at 6 p.m. on Friday and 10 a.m. on Saturday.
