ST. LOUIS --- UNI redshirt senior Parker Kiewiet has been named the Missouri Valley Conference's (MVC) Men's Track Athlete of the Week, as announced by the league office on Wednesday afternoon.
The selection is Kiewiet's first outdoor weekly conference honor of his career and second overall after earning track honors this past January in indoor competition.
A Dike, Iowa native, Kiewiet posted a strong sprinting performance for the Panthers at the Fresno State Invitational last weekend in California. The redshirt senior ran the second leg of UNI's school record and first-place 4x100-meter relay team alongside Tinashe Chigudu, Luke Meyers and Luke Nevitt in 39.47 seconds, the fastest time in the MVC this season and 0.01 off tying the conference record set by Wichita State in 2003. Kiewiet also captured first place in the men's 200-meter dash at Fresno State with a season-best time of 20.84 seconds, the MVC's top time in the event this year and the sixth-fastest wind legal time in Northern Iowa history. He also placed second in the 100 meters in a career-best 10.49 seconds.
Kiewiet holds UNI's top times this year in four events, including both the 100 and 200-meter dashes, as well as the 4x100 and 4x400-meter relays, while also leading the conference in the 200 meters.
In addition to Kiewiet, Indiana State's Rachel Mehringer (women's track) and Aliseonna Garnett (women's field) were recognized with weekly MVC recognition, while Drake's Cooper Cerese was named the conference's men's field athlete of the week.
Kiewiet and the Panthers return to action UNI competes at the Cyclone Twilight this Friday in Ames.
