Panther men lead team race after first day of competition with the UNI women in second.
TERRE HAUTE, Ind. — The 2026 Missouri Valley Conference (MVC) Outdoor Track and Field Championships kicked off for the UNI Panthers on Saturday, with the purple and gold capturing a pair of event titles in field competition at the Gibson Track and Field Complex on the Indiana State University campus.
Northern Iowa won the women's javelin with Katy Stephens leading the way, while Carter Morton topped the field to win the men's long jump. Saturday's competition also saw strong performances by UNI's other field athletes, as well as preliminary heats in multiple track events.
At the end of the first day of action, the Panthers, picked as the pre-championship favorites on both the men's and women's side, lead the men's team race with 56 points, holding a 14-point advantage over second-place Illinois State. The UNI women meanwhile sit in second behind two-time reigning champion Indiana State by 17 points, and 17 points ahead of third-place Illinois State.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Stephens earned her first career MVC outdoor title and second overall of her career in the javelin, throwing for a career-best 147' 10, the fifth-furthest mark in school history as Jorie Hanenburg followed in fifth (128' 7) and Makayla Crannell in seventh (120' 11). Stephens' victory, her first conference title since winning the 2024 MVC indoor pentathlon, marks Northern Iowa's first women's conference javelin champion since Anna Bentley in 2018.
Morton meanwhile led the charge in the men's long jump with a winning leap of 25' 2 ½ to complete the sweep of the 2026 MVC indoor and outdoor long jump crowns. Parker Kiewiet, the 2025 MVC outdoor long jump champion, followed in second for the Panthers (24' 9 ¾) as T.Y. Pour took seventh (23' 2 ¾). Morton previously won the conference's outdoor long jump title in 2023 with UNI now having won the event in three of the last five seasons.
In the men's javelin, Morton also led the Panthers with a career-best throw of 194' 9 to finish in third, with Davis Brogan (194' 6) and Colin Buch (157' 7) both setting personal bests in fourth and eighth respectively.
The women's pole vault would go right down to the wire with a tight finish atop the standings where Erica Miner placed second with a 13' ¾ leap, as Sydnee Scott tied her career-best of 12' 4 ¾ to place fifth. Morton and Jacob Yoerger both tied for fourth in the men's pole vault after both athletes cleared 16' 1 ¾.
Elsewhere in field action, Josey Dunbar, the reigning MVC women's outdoor long jump champion finished in second for UNI with a 19' 6 leap, with teammate Maleah Walker following in fifth (18' 6). David Russell set a new career-best mark of 194' 4 to take third in the men's hammer throw, with Tory Wash taking seventh (184' 9).
In the multi-event competitions, Tye Hardin put on an impressive showing in the first day of competition, winning four of the first five events in the decathlon including the 100 meters, long jump, shot put and high jump, while also taking second in the 400 meters to finish the day with 3,927 points.
Brody Lovell sits in fifth in the decathlon (3,133 points) after a new career-best in the shot put and season bests in the high jump and 400 meters, while Buch is in sixth with 3,021 points, with personal bests in two events. In the heptathlon, Katy Hand sits in sixth with 2,823 points after taking second in both the high jump and shot put.
On the track, the Panthers picked up team points in the finals of two distance races with Amelia Hill taking second in the women's 3,000-meter steeplechase with a season-best time (10:23.23), followed by a career-best time from Evie Henneberry in eighth (10:54.47) and Melody Ochana in ninth (10:57.51). Jonas VanDis meanwhile took fifth for Northern Iowa in the men's 3,000-meter steeplechase with a new personal best mark (9:12.03), as Colin Lillie placed fourth in the men's 10,000-meter final (30:30.85) with Meghan Wheatley running a career-best time of 36:20.72 to finish sixth in the women's 10,000 meters.
