CEDAR FALLS, Iowa --- The 2024 U.S. Olympic Track and Field Trials began at the University of Oregon's Hayward Field on Friday, with three former members of the UNI roster scheduled to compete for a spot on Team USA for next month's Paris Games.
Brandon Carnes, a 2015 UNI graduate and 2023 World Champion as a sprinter, will compete in both the 100 and 200-meter dashes during his time in Eugene in his second Olympic Trials appearance. A six-time Missouri Valley Conference (MVC) individual champion, Carnes captured his first international gold medal at last summer's World Athletics Championships in Budapest, Hungary as part of the United States' championship 4x100-meter relay team.
Alex Teubel, another 2015 Panther graduate, UNI's current head cross country coach and assist track coach will race in the women's 1,500 meters next week. During her collegiate career, Teubel was a breakout distance athlete for the purple and gold in both cross country and track. As a senior, she captured both the 800 and 1,500-meter MVC outdoor titles as a senior, and would go on to run at the U.S. Olympic Trials in 2016 and 2020.
Mari Shavers, who graduated from UNI just last spring, will make her Olympic Trials debut in the women's hammer throw on Friday. One of the top throwers in program history, Shavers, a Waterloo, Iowa native spent two seasons with the Panthers after transferring in from Hawkeye Community College. Shavers registered the second-best hammer throw toss in school history at 65.58 meters in 2023, earning NCAA All-American Honorable Mention recognition as one of the first two Panther women to qualify for the national championships in the event. She currently serves as a volunteer assistant throwing coach for UNI.
