Three Panthers find the podium on the second day of the MVC Outdoor Championships

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. --- UNI track and field finished the second day of competition at the 2024 Missouri Valley Conference (MVC) Outdoor Championships on Saturday afternoon with a trio of podium athletes making their way to the podium..
The first events to finish up in Terre Haute were the decathlon and the heptathlon, where Drew Bartels took home a silver medal with 6,439 points in the decathlon, with first-place finishes in the 100-meter and the 110-meter hurdles. Brody Lovell and Colin Buch finished in fourth and fifth places with 6,184 and 6,022 points respectively. Lovell won the high jump in the decathlon while Buch finished in first-place in the shot put and the discus. In the heptathlon, Katy Stephens took home the second place with 5,038 points, while Joey Perry finished seventh with 4,693 points including a first-place finish in the heptathlon's 800-meter run.
On the track, Emma Hoins and Amelia Hill finished the 3,000-meter steeplechase in fourth and fifth places with times of 10:32.44 and 10:47.74 respectively. Hill's time was a personal best. On the men's side, Carson Owens finished the steeplechase with a personal best time of 9:14.28.
In the preliminary heats of the men's 110-meter hurdles, Jack Sumners qualified for Sunday's finals with a time of 14.05 seconds to lead the field, while Hunter Manock also qualified for the finals with a time of 14.34 seconds. In the 100-meter prelims, Jerome Jessup qualified for the finals with a leading time of 10.54 seconds. Zach Fall punched his ticket for the 400-meter finals on Sunday with a time of 47.94 seconds, as Madelyn Sanda qualified for the women's 100-meter finals with a time of 11.75 seconds.
In the field events, Josey Dunbar found the podium in the women's long jump with a second-place leap of 5.97 meters. Spencer Kessel came up just shy of making the podium in the men's shot put with a fourth-place finish and top throw of 17.50 meters, while Sumners took seventh in the men's long jump with a jump of 7.06 meters.
In the women's shot put, Jorie Hanenburg led the Panthers with a fifth-place throw of 14.37 meters. Breanna Hackman followed Hanenburg in sixth place with a 14.09-meter toss, with Allison Flanscha finishing in eighth place with a throw of 13.85 meters. In the high jump, Ethan Peters took seventh place with a jump of 1.95 meters, as Josie Moreland finished in eighth place in the women's high jump with a height of 1.65 meters.
The UNI men currently sit in third place as a team heading into day three with 56 points while the women sit in fourth place with 39.5 points. The Panthers are back in action for the final day of the MVC Outdoor Championships on Sunday.
