Miller captures javelin title on opening day of MVC Outdoor Championships

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. --- UNI track and field wrapped up the opening day of the 2024 Missouri Valley Conference (MVC) Outdoor Championships on Friday after already claiming one conference title.
In the men's javelin throw, Justice Miller took home his first individual conference crown with a 61.80-meter throw to propel him to his first MVC outdoor title, UNI's first champion in the event at the MVC Championships since Juri Rovan in 1995. In the men's pole vault, Brendan Safley recorded a jump of 5.10 meters to take home second place.
The men's hammer throw saw three Panthers place in the top eight with Jacob Baier taking home third-place with a throw of 60.75 meters while Bo Braunecker and Justin Olson finished in sixth and seventh places with throws of 56.78 meters and 56.59 meters respectively.
On the track, Kate Crawford finished the women's 10,000-meter with a time of 35:47.35 for fifth place. In the 200-meter prelims, Deonte Dean and Jerome Jessup finished in fifth and sixth places with times of 21.44 seconds and 21.49 seconds. Both qualified for the finals while Jessup finished with a career-best mark after a previous best time of 21.58 seconds in the Wartburg Good Friday Challenge. Issac Vaske qualified for the 400-meter hurdle finals after a seventh-place finish and a time of 55.71 seconds.
The Panthers are back in action on Saturday for day two of the three-day championship meet.
