UNI track & field: Panthers top the field in seven events at Jim Duncan Invitational

DES MOINES, Iowa — UNI track and field took their talents to Drake Stadium for the first time this outdoor season, picking up seven first-place titles at the Jim Duncan Invitational on Friday on the historic Blue Oval.
Caroline Benfeldt-Sorensen, Ariana Yaklich, Olivia Kramer and Madelyn Sanda kicked off the meet by winning the women's 4x100-meter relay in a time of 46.36. In the women's 100-meter hurdles, Paige Kisley took second place in a time of 14.37, as Olivia Kramer claimed fourth place with a personal-best time of 14.15. Jack Sumners secured the men's 110-meter hurdle title in a personal-best time of 13.89, while Jerome Jessup finished in fourth place in the 400-meter in a time of 49.95. Anna Winterrowd crossed the finish line in fourth place in a time of 1:04.22 in the women's 400-meter hurdles.
In the distance race, Emma Hoins topped the field in the women's 1,500-meter run with a winning time of 4:33.52, with Sophia Jungling (4:34.60) and Mary Kelly (4:48.24) placing second and fourth respectively. Benfeldt-Sorensen came in second place in the women's 100-meter dash for the Panthers in a personal-best time of 11.75, as Luke Meyers (unattached) finished second in a personal-best time of 10.56 in the men's 100-meter sprint.
Finishing second in the women's 800 meters, Kendra Nissen took second place in 2:16.12 with Liza Schaffer placing third (2:17.02). Competing unattached, Chase Knoche took second in the men's 800 meters, running a 1:50.98. Kate Crawford won the women's 5000-meter race in a personal-best time of 17:05.21. On the men's side, Caleb Shumaker finished fourth in a personal-best time of 14:47.35.
In the field, Katie Fare took home the women's shot put title for UNI with a throw of 16.78 meters as an unattached athlete. Breanna Hackman placed fourth in the women's discus throw with a 44.75-meter toss. Alivia Silvestri (unattached) won the women's pole vault after clearing 3.45 meters, competing unattached in the event. Chloe Largent came in second place in the women's high jump (1.60 meters), while Katy Stephens finished second with a jump of 5.57 meters.
Justice Miller came out on top for the Panthers in the men's javelin throw with a personal-best throw of 62.14 meters to claim first place, as Drew Bartels finished in fourth (50.85 meters). Katie Fare, competing unattached, placed third in the women's hammer throw with a personal-best throw of 53.91 meters. Brendan Safley took home first-place in the men's pole vault, with a vault of 4.90 meters across the board, while Jack Sumners in the men's long jump finished in third place (6.88 meters). In the men's hammer throw, Jacob Baier claimed second place with a personal-best throw of 60.99 meters, as Bo Braunecker came in third place with a personal-best throw of 59.01 meters.

Northern Iowa returns to action next Saturday, April 20 at the Musco Twilight, hosted by the University of Iowa. Competition is scheduled to begin at 12 p.m. CT at the Francis X. Cretzmeyer Track in Coralville.
