CEDAR FALLS, Iowa --- UNI tennis will kick off its longest homestand of the 2023-24 season on Friday morning as the Panthers welcome the Northern Illinois Huskies to the Cedar Valley in non-conference dual action. Northern Iowa will also host Western Illinois early Saturday afternoon.
Competition is scheduled to begin on Friday at 10 a.m. CT against the Huskies, and 1 p.m. CT on Saturday with the Leathernecks. Both duals will be held at the Black Hawk Tennis Club in Waterloo.
The Panthers return home after dropping both of their road contests last weekend in eastern Nebraska in a 6-1 loss at Creighton, and a 5-2 loss at Omaha. Darta Dalecka picked up UNI's lone victory against the Bluejays with a three-set victory over Valerie Negin (6-4, 5-7, 10-3) in the second singles slot. Against the Mavericks on Sunday, Andrijana Brkic topped Omaha's Paula Arcarons (6-1, 7-5) in the top singles match of the day, while Issa Sullivan also picked up a win via retirement.
Dalecka leads the Panthers with an 8-8 record in singles, with Brkic picking up five wins. In doubles play, Brkic, along with her partner Kim Zizek, lead UNI with four wins as a duo.
Northern Illinois comes to town having split its first four duals of the season, most recently securing home wins last weekend against Marquette (6-1) and Bellarmine (4-3). Erika Dimitriev, Diana Lukyanova and Isabella Righi all enter Friday's dual with a 2-2 singles record for the Huskies, while the doubles pairing of Jenna Horne and Reagan Welch are 3-1 as a pair on the court.
Western Illinois will make the trip to Waterloo after facing St. Thomas (MN) on Friday, looking to snap out of a two-dual skid having dropped consecutive duals to Cincinnati and Bowling Green, 7-0. Anna-Evelina Trush leads the Leathernecks with a 2-2 singles mark this year, with Lara Rossetto Diniz de Souza and Paige Grice carrying a 2-2 doubles record into the weekend as a pairing.
