Panther heavyweight becomes just the third UNI wrestler to earn Academic All-American recognition.
GREENWOOD, Ind. --- UNI wrestler Tyrell Gordon joined elite company in academic excellence as he was named a Third Team Academic All-American by College Sports Communicators (CSC) on Wednesday.
The honor, which recognizes the nation's top student-athletes for their combined performances in the athletic realm and in the classroom, separately recognizes honorees in four divisions — NCAA Division I, NCAA Division II, NCAA Division III and NAIA. To be eligible for All-American honors, student-athletes must have also been named CSC Academic All-District.
Gordon's recognition marks the 56th CSC Academic All-American selection in school history, and just the third time a Panther wrestler has received the honor, joining Gary Steffensmeier (1992) and Nick Baima (2007).
A native of Waterloo, Iowa, Gordon, qualified for his second NCAA Championships this past season with UNI at 285 pounds, entering the national tournament seeded 13th in the nation. He picked up a pair of wins against 20th-seeded Konner Douchet (Oklahoma State) and 19th-seeded Jonah Nisesenbaum (Duke) after placing fourth at the Big 12 Championships.
During the regular season, Gordon started all 12 duals for UNI, posting a 6-6 record and 4-4 mark against conference opponents. He notched three top-25 wins during the regular season, including a win over then No. 21 Douchet at home, and Tate Orndorff (Ohio State) twice, first when he was ranked No. 7 in the nation at the Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invite, and again ranked ninth at the Collegiate Duals in New Orleans. Gordon finished the season with a 20-13 record overall, with additional academic honors from the Big 12 and National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA).
CSC sponsors Academic All-America recognition for men's soccer, women's soccer, football, volleyball, men's basketball, women's basketball, men's swimming & diving, women's swimming & diving, men's tennis, women's tennis, baseball, softball and men's and women's track and field/cross country. At-large berths are up for grabs from those student-athletes competing in wrestling, golf, lacrosse, rowing, gymnastics, and numerous other NCAA-sponsored sports.
