UNI wrestling crowns five champions at Grand View Open

GRIMES, Iowa --- Five Panthers topped the podium on Saturday as 11 members of the UNI wrestling team opened up open tournament competition at the Grand View Open in the Des Moines metro area.
Northern Iowa veterans Garret Rinken (133 pounds) and Ethan Basile (149 pounds) won their respective weight titles in the open divisions, while Jace Hedeman (133 pounds), Max Brady (141 pounds) and Logan Paradice (149 pounds) all won in their respective weight classes in the freshmen/sophomore divisions in their collegiate debuts.
In total, Panther wrestlers posted a combined record of 45-9 on the day with 23 bonus point victories.
Rinken posted a 4-0 record on the day with a quarterfinal technical fall and major decision win before topping Grand View's Gabe Gonzalez in a 4-0 decision in the 133 pound open final. Basile notched five victories in his season debut, including an opening round 18-0 technical fall over Brody Brisker (William Penn), 16-3 major decision over Cole Krasinski (Cornerstone) and a 7-1 win over Royce Nilo (Wisconsin) in the finals of the open 149 pound division.
Hedeman opened strong in the freshman/sophomore bracket at 133 pounds with a 91 second pin of Benjamin Whitright (North Idaho) and 21-5 technical fall over Ethan Skoglund (Northwestern) in his first two bouts of the day before an 8-6 championship bout against Muhammad Bilad (Iowa Central).
Brady tallied six wins in his first collegiate outing, recording tech falls in all six matches, including an 18-5 victory over Caleb Carter (Maryville) in the finals of the freshman/sophomore 141 pound field. Paradice capped the run of Panther champions with three major decisions and three technical falls en route to the 149 pound freshman/sophomore division title, topping Collin Mcdowell (Wisconsin) in the finals, 20-5.
Additionally, two other Panthers medalled in the open division with Brandon Paez taking third place at 125 pounds and Cameron Geuther finishing in fifth in the heavyweight bracket in his UNI debut.
UP NEXT
The Panthers return to action next Sunday, Nov. 23 as they host the North Dakota State Bison in Big 12 dual action for their home opener. Competition is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. CT inside the McLeod Center with live coverage available on FloWrestling.
