CEDAR FALLS, Iowa — With the Missouri Valley Conference (MVC) Outdoor Track and Field Championships just one week away, the UNI Panthers hit the road for their final meet before facing off against conference competition this Friday at the Wisconsin Alumni Classic in Madison. Competition is slated to begin at 1 p.m. CT at the McClimon Track/Soccer Complex.
The Panthers were originally scheduled to compete at South Dakota's USD Tune-Up this Friday, but altered their schedule due to forecasted weather in the area.
UNI heads to Madison with several athletes beginning to find their stride ahead of championship competition. The Panthers recorded nine new times and marks in the program's top-five rankings last weekend in competitions at Simpson's Kip Janvrin Open and the Drake Relays.
Jack Sumners claimed his third outdoor title in the 110-meter hurdles this season at Simpson last weekend with a career-best time of 13.87 second, cracking UNI's top-five rankings list. He also took third in the event at the Drake Relays. Sumners currently leads the MVC with the fastest time in the event this season.
Jacob Baier secured his first collegiate victory in the men's hammer throw at the Kip Janvrin Open with a toss of 57.55 meters, while Drake Hanson recorded the third-fastest 800-meter time in school history in 1:48.19 with a new career-best time. Hanson, along with teammate Chase Knoche, hold two of the three fastest times in the MVC this season in the 800-meters, and ranks 41st in the nation in the event.
Fresh off a decathlon title at the Drake Relays, UNI's first in ten years, Carter Morton looks to show out once again in Madison. The Jefferson, Iowa native recorded 7,454 points in his winning effort at Drake Stadium last week, setting a new career record in points, which also ranks fourth-best in program history. The only MVC decathlete to surpass 7,000 points this season, Morton ranks 14th in the nation in the multi-event competition. Zack Butcher also posted a career-best performance with 6,875 points in the Drake Relays decathlon, finishing second to Morton.
Sprinter Isaiah Trousil became the second Panther to win the men's 100-meters at the Blue Oval, recording a winning time of 10.14 seconds last Saturday in Des Moines. Having won the event earlier this season at the Texas Relays, Trousil ranks 25th in the nation entering the weekend in the 100-meter sprint.
In the throwing pits, Makenna Wilson earned her first Drake Relays title in the women's hammer throw, setting a school record in the process with a toss of 64.64 meters. Wilson and teammate Mari Shavers, who placed second overall in the women's hammer throw at Simpson with a throw of 61.32 meters, rank first and second in the event in the MVC and 19th and 47th respectively in the national rankings.
