
Panther track & field: Trousil advances on opening night of NCAA Regionals

UNI sprinter seeks to qualify for next month's NCAA Championships in 100 and 200-meter dashes.
SACRAMENTO, Calif. --- UNI sprinter Isaiah Trousil secured his spot in two national quarterfinal races on Wednesday night as the Panthers opened up competition at the NCAA West Regional meet at Hornet Stadium.
Trousil, who won the Missouri Valley Conference (MVC) outdoor championships in both the 100 and 200-meter dashes, kicked his night off in the 100 meters, entering the meet tied for the fifth-fastest time in the region. The West Burlington, Iowa native won his heat with a time of 10.27 seconds, locking up a spot in Friday night's national quarterfinal at 8:35 p.m. CT.
Trousil followed up his 100-meter performance with an impressive showing in the 200 meters, quickly shooting his way near the front of the pack in the final stretch for a second place finish in his heat and tenth place overall result in 20.59 seconds. The Panther sprinter, who will run the 200-meter quarterfinal on Friday at 9:50 p.m. CT, can qualify for the NCAA Outdoor Championships, scheduled for June 7-10 in Austin, Texas with a top-12 finish on Friday in either of his individual events.
Four Panthers made their NCAA regional debut on the west coast as Jack Sumners placed 44th overall in the men's 110-meter hurdles with a time of 14.40 seconds. Chase Knoche and Drake Hanson both ran the men's 800 meters, with Knoche clocking a time of 1:50.00 flat to take 30th place, while Hanson finished in 48th (2:01.37).
MVC men's pole vault champion Brendan Safley was able to clear two separate heights in his NCAA regional debut, clearing 4.90 meters on his first attempt of the night, and 5.05 meters on his third and final attempt. Safely finishes his season with a 32nd place finish in the event.

The Panthers return to action tomorrow in field competition as Makenna Wilson and Mari Shavers compete in the women's hammer throw at 1 p.m. CT. Wilson will also join teammate Katie Fare in the women's shot put beginning at 8 p.m. CT. Action will be streamed live on ESPN+ with a subscription.
