3/11/2023 6:00:00 PM | Softball
TULSA, Okla. -- The Panthers picked up their first win over Sam Houston State since 2017 as they split games on their second day in the Sooner State.Â
Two big offensive innings were enough for UNI to win its 10th game of the season against the Kats. But the Panther offense didn't continue its hot streak into their second game, as they were held to a single hit by the Golden Hurricane. With the win against Sam Houston State, UNI's record remains above .500 with one game left in the non-conference portion of the season.
Game 1 | W, 5-1
The bats got going early in the Panthers' morning contest on Saturday as both teams collected a hit in the first. But only UNI was able to bring a runner home early in the bottom of the second. The Panthers quickly put a runner on base thanks to a fielding error from third base. A fielder's choice for third baseman Brooke Snider two at bat's later reset UNI back to having a runner only at first.Â
Snider didn't remain at first for long as right fielder Faith Standerski smacked a double to right center, giving Snider enough time to round home. First baseman Daryn Lamprecht followed up with a long single into left-center to bring Standerski home. The Panthers headed into the top of the third leading the Kats 2-0.
Both teams picked up a hit in the third but stranded two runners each for a quick middle frame. Sam Houston cut UNI's lead in the top of the fourth with a lead-off solo home run to center. But the Panthers quickly responded on defense with two putouts and starting pitcher Samantha Heyer's sixth strikeout of the game.Â
UNI had its best offensive inning of the day in the bottom of the fourth. The Panthers loaded up the bases with one out thanks to two walks and another fielding error. After a second out was on the board, center fielder Madison Parks hit a double all the way down the left field line to score three runs. Up by four with three innings to go, UNI buckled down defensively to wrap up the game.Â
The Panthers took down the Kats in order while adding another hit in the bottom of the fifth. Sam Houston scored one more run in the top of the sixth on another solo homer but had a ground out and struck out looking to give UNI its last turn on offense.
After two straight strikeouts, Parks picked up a single. But she was caught trying to steal second base moments later to end the sixth inning. The Panthers were then able to close out the game half a frame early, getting three straight outs to win their 10th game of the season.Â
Seven batters picked up a hit for UNI against the Kats with Parks having the only multi-hit game of the day. Parks also led the Panthers in RBIs with three from her double down the left-field line in the fourth. Standerski and Lamprecht each picked up an RBI as well in the win. Heyer pitched her fifth complete game of the season, allowing four hits for two earned runs. Heyer also continued her strong strikeout-to-walk ratio as she took down 12 batters while not allowing a single walk.Â
Game 2 | L, 1-0
While the Panthers' first game of the day was an offensive explosion, the second game was a true pitcher's dual between starting pitcher Kailyn Packard and Tulsa's Maura Moore. The first hit of the game didn't come until the bottom of the second and was the only hit to score a run all afternoon. The Golden Hurricane hit a solo homer to right in its second at-bat of the inning for an early lead. UNI took out the next two batters in the field to end the inning.
Neither team had a hit in the third while the Panthers picked up a walk. UNI had its only hit of the game in the top of the fourth as catcher Alexis Pupillo hit a lead-off single to left. Pupillo was taken out the next play on a fielder's choice as Parks made it to first. Parks was caught stealing for the second time on Saturday to end the Panther's offensive half of the fourth.Â
Packard kept Tulsa from picking up a hit in the fourth. After plunking the first batter of the inning, Packard intentionally walked the Golden Hurricane's best hitter with two outs to bring up a batter who had been struggling over the weekend. Packard was able to throw the swinging strikeout to end the inning.Â
Tulsa picked up two hits with two outs on the board in the next inning after UNI went down in order. Packard threw another gem of a strike, getting the Golden Hurricane batter to ground out to third and eliminate the threat. Neither team had much luck in the sixth as the pitcher's dual continued between Packard and Moore.Â
The Panthers had their best chance of tying up the game in the top of the final inning. With two outs to start, back-to-back walks for designated player Hannah Kelley and pinch hitter Ellie Owen had UNI with a runner in scoring position. But a line out to first after Owen's walk ended the game giving the Panthers their one loss of the day.Â
Packard also pitched a complete game for UNI on Saturday. In 6 innings pitched, Packard threw three strikeouts, allowed a walk, threw one intentional walk, and allowed just one run in 23 batters faced.Â
