Hanson earns first weekly recognition for career-best in 800-meters. Fare wins second straight weekly award.
ST. LOUIS — UNI junior Drake Hanson and redshirt junior Katie Fare have been named the Missouri Valley Conference's (MVC) Male Track and Female Field Athletes of the Week, as announced by the league office on Wednesday. The selection is Hanson's first weekly honor of his career, while Fare earns her second selection of the month.
Hanson, a native of Pleasant Hill, Iowa, earns conference recognition after setting a new personal best in the men's 800-meter run at the Iowa Open this past weekend with a time of 1:49.88, ranking just outside the top-five all-time in UNI history. The Southeast Polk High School product also won the 800-meters the week prior at the SDSU Indoor Classic. Hanson's career-best time currently ranks fourth fastest in the MVC this season.
Fare picks up her second consecutive Female Field Athlete of the Week honor after taking second place in the shot put at Wisconsin's Valentine's Day Invitational last Friday. With a toss of 54 feet, 7.5 inches, Fare recorded the second furthest throw of her career after setting a career-best at the SDSU Indoor Classic a week earlier of 54 feet, 8.75 inches, the second-best mark in program history. Fare currently leads all MVC female shot put throwers by one foot, 10.75 inches, and sits one foot, 8.75 inches behind Rachel Jansen's 2007 school record. She also ranks 28th in the nation in the event.
Other MVC Athlete of the Week honoree's include Indiana State's Ryann Porter (Male Field) and Illinois State's Amiri Buchanan (Female Track).
Hanson and Fare return to action this weekend as the Panthers head to Gately Park in Chicago for the 2023 MVC Indoor Championships. Competition can be streamed live through ESPN+.
