UNI softball at Austin Peay State
UNI will play the Austin Peay State Governors for the second straight season with a single game on Wednesday afternoon at Cathi Maynard Park. Wednesday's game has been moved up by two hours to a 1 p.m. first pitch due to rain in the forecast.
Last season the Panthers split two games with the Governors in Austin Peay's annual Governors Classic tournament. UNI dropped the first game last year by one run but got its revenge the next day in a 6-4 win.Â
THE PANTHERS:
- UNI struggled to put a complete game together at the annual Doc Halverson UNI-Dome Classic. Of the Panthers five games over the first weekend of play, two were within a run while three became save situations.
- The Panthers had a handful of players start in their first collegiate game at the Doc Halverson Classic. Those players included catcher Alexis Pupillo, pitcher Anna Wischnowski, and infielder Kate Lappe.
- While UNI hasn't found its first win of the season, they are excelling in two specific categories. The Panthers are currently 10th in the nation in double plays per game at 0.60. UNI recorded three double plays during the Doc Halverson Classic in games against Omaha and Iowa State. The Panthers also come in at 14th in the nation in stolen bases per game, averaging 2.6.
- The Panthers are currently led on offense by infielder Taylor Hogan and outfielder Faith Standerski. Both players are currently batting above .300, have at least one run scored, and have collected one RBI apiece.
THE GOVERNORS:
- Austin Peay enters Wednesday's game with a 2-5 record, including going 2-3 overall this past weekend at the Auburn Tiger Invitational, with shutout victories over Dayton and Villanova.Â
- The Governors are hosting their first game in February since hosting Miami University on February 13, 2015.Â
-Austin Peay is led on offense by graduate third baseman LexiOsowski-Anderson, who is batting .375, with a double, triple, and a home run in nine hits. She has also driven in a team co-leading four RBI.Â
- The Governors have junior Jordan Benefiel (2-3) leading off the Governors' pitching staff in the circle. She has posted a 2.90 ERA in 31.1 innings while striking out 31 and holding opponents to a .248 batting average.
