UNI cross country bolts into MVC Championships in Nashville

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa — UNI cross country travels to Nashville, Tennessee to compete in the 2023 Missouri Valley Conference (MVC) Championships this Friday at Percy Warner Park. The women's 6K will begin at 10 a.m. CT, while the men's 8K will follow. Live coverage of the meet can be found on ESPN+.
The UNI women's team was selected sixth in the pre-championship poll released by the Missouri Valley Conference (MVC) Monday morning with 79 points, while the men's team was selected ninth with 95 points heading into the conference championships.
After returning home from competing at the Bradley Pink Classic, where seven UNI athletes recorded personal-bests on the course, the Panthers have had two weeks to prepare for the MVC Championships.
The UNI men's team finished in 21st place overall with a total of 569 points at Bradley, while the women's team tallied up a total of 459 points to finish in 21st out of 32 teams in Illinois two weekends ago.
In the red division, Caleb Shumaker led the Panthers with a time of 25:22 in the 8K finishing in 66th place. Chase Lauman improved his career-best time to 25:27, cutting off 25 seconds to finish in 79th place. Freshman Colin Lillie rounded out the purple and gold, improving his 8K time to 26:58 in 191st place.
On the women's side, Emma Hoins finished in the top-40, finishing in 31st place in a time of 21:50, shaving off 16 seconds in the women's 6K red division. Kate Crawford ran a time of 22:31 finishing in 82nd place as Sophia Jungling ran a career-best time of 22:52 in 123rd place. Ella Popnehagen (23:00) finished in 133rd place, with Kaylee Woolery running a personal-best time of 23:03 to finish in 135th place.
