UNI cross country: Panthers notch season, career-bests at MVC Championships

WOMEN'S RESULTS (6K)MEN'S RESULTS (8K)

NASHVILLE, Tenn. --- UNI cross country went toe-to-toe against its fellow conference opponents on Friday morning, competing at the 2023 Missouri Valley Conference (MVC) Championships at Percy Warner Park in Nashville.

The Panther women recorded an eighth place finish as a team with 181 total points, while the UNI men took tenth place with 240 points. Host Belmont claimed the women's team championship with 40 points, while Drake clinched the men's title with 41 points.

Four Panthers kicked off the morning on the women's side recording career and season-bests, led by Emma Hoins with a 14th place finish in the 6K race with a career-best time of 21:39. Kate Crawford came in 26th place in a season-best time of 22:07, while Eden Mueller also ran a career-best time of 22:27 to cross the finish line in 41st place.

Ella Popenhagen (22:42) and Sophia Jungling (22:52) came in 47th and 54th respectively. Kaylee Woolery (23:03), Kayla Young (23:17) and Brooke O'Brien (23:35) all finished in 64th, 69th and 78th place on the course.

On the men's side, Caleb Shumaker recorded a 28th place finish in a time of 25:37 in the 8K competition, as Brady Griebel took 50th place in a time of 26:14. Tyler Colvin ran a time of 26:22 to cross the finish line in 57th place.

Carson Owens (26:23) and Colin Lillie (27:17) came in 59th and 68th place respectively for the Panthers. Freshman Josh Gormley (27:27) and Caleb Kass (27:31) took home 72nd and 74th place.

Belmont took home the women's cross country team title with 40 points, Bradley coming in close second. While Drake won the men's cross country team title with 41 points.

UNI returns to action on Friday, Nov. 10 as the Panthers head south for the NCAA Midwest Regional Championships, hosted by Oklahoma State University in Stillwater, Oklahoma.
