UNI cross country: Crawford and Shumaker lead Panthers in first meet of season

Normal, Ill. --- Tackling the first meet of the 2022 season, the UNI men's and women's cross country teams took to the course on Friday night at the Redbird Invite, held at the Weibring Golf Club.
The Panther women finished 4th in the 9 team field, while the men's team took 5th out of 8 programs competing.Â
Three Panthers finished in the top-20 individually in the 6K race, led by Kate Crawford, who finished 15th in the 83-person field with a time of 22:23, dropping 10 seconds from her top time from the event last fall. Sophia Jungling finished shortly behind Crawford in 18th place with a time of 22:37, while Mia Rampton took 19th with a time of 22:44. Emma Hoins ran a 22:53 (21st place), while Isabelle Schaffer posted a time of 23:22 (30th place).Â
On the men's side, Caleb Shumaker led UNI on the 8K course with a 15th place finish with a time of 25:30, marking his second consecutive top-25 finish at the Redbird Invite. Brady Griebel and Payton Marrs broke into the top-30 with times of 26:01 (26th place) and 26:07 (28th place) respectively. Jayden Dickson and Kon Dut both made their collegiate debuts for the Panthers, with Dickson running a time of 27:32 (59th place) and Dut posting a 60th place finish with a time of 27:36.

UNI returns to action on Friday, Sept. 30 as the Panthers compete in the Gans Creek Classic in Columbia, Mo., hosted by the University of Missouri at the Gans Creek Cross Country Course.
