UNI soccer to test unbeaten streak against South Dakota State

UNI Soccer vs. South Dakota State
The reigning Summit League Tournament Champions, South Dakota State will visit Cedar Falls for the first time since 2019 to take on UNI Soccer on Thursday afternoon. The Panthers and Jackrabbits last saw each other in 2021 for a match in Brookings at Fishback Soccer Park. South Dakota State came out on top with four goals against UNI in the Jackrabbits third straight win of the series. With the series returning to home field, the Panthers will look to take advantage of their current homestand to get win number four.Â
THE PANTHERS:
- UNI put several single-game records into the record book on Sunday afternoon in its 5-0 win over St. Ambrose. The Panthers took 34 shots in the game and 18 shots on goal making the performance the second most shots in a single game. UNI set a similar precedent for shots and shots on goal in a half with 20 shots in the first half and 11 shots on goal.Â
- Two Panthers were named MVC Players of the Week by conference staff. Senior defender Allison Whitaker took home Defensive honors while freshman forward Sydney Burskey was the Freshman of the Week.
-Head Coach Bruce Erickson now holds the record for most wins by a Head Coach in program history. He surpassed former HC James Price with his 41st win on Sunday against the St. Ambrose Bees.
- Freshman forward Sydney Burskey became a breakout star for the Panthers on Sunday. Burskey took control of UNI's offensive attack with a goal and two assists against the Bees. She now leads the team on offense with five points.
THE JACKRABBITS:
- South Dakota State is off to a 3-0-1 start to the season in 2022. The Jackrabbits were able to get two victories and a tie while on a road trip in Arizona to begin the season. SDSU then returned home for one game against Bemidji State in a 3-0 win before heading to Cedar Falls this week.
- The Jackrabbits were picked to finish second in the Summit League in the league preseason poll after a historic 2021 campaign. South Dakota State finished the season at 17-4-1 and won The Summit League Conference tournament title. The Jackrabbits season then ended with a loss in the NCAA Tournament to Pepperdine.
- SDSU is led by senior forward Maya Hansen and sophomore midfielder Avery Murdzek. Hansen has recorded three goals and three assists for nine points, while Murdzek has five points on two goals and an assist through the first four games. Hansen also became the program record holder in game-winning goals with 14 in her career.
- Jackrabbits defender Kaycee Manding picked up a weekly conference honor as the TicketSmarter Summit League Women's Defensive Peak Performer of the Week. Manding recorded two assists in SDSU's 3-2 victory at Northern Arizona and tied for a team-high 75 minutes played. She followed it up by playing 70 minutes against Bemidji State.Â
