Panthers to host two duals at home, MVC Championships in Iowa City
CEDAR FALLS, Iowa --- With the season's first practice quickly approaching, the UNI Swimming and Diving has released its meet schedule for the 2022-23 season. The Panthers will host a pair of duals in October and January, while spending much of the season on the road.
The Panthers will open with a home intrasquad scrimmage on Oct. 1 at the Glen F. Henry Pool inside UNI's Wellness-Recreation Center. UNI will officially begin the season on Oct. 7 as the purple and gold take on Iowa at home. Last season, the Panthers were victorious over the Hawkeyes in a 159-133 dual win in Iowa City last fall, marking UNI's first ever dual win against Iowa.
UNI will visit Chicago for the MVC Showcase Oct. 21-22, featuring the Panthers against UIC, Illinois State and Indiana State. The Panthers will then travel to Sioux Falls for the Coyote Extravaganza, a two-day competition that will see UNI compete in ten total dual meets against South Dakota, South Dakota State, St. Thomas, St. Cloud State and Sioux Falls at the Midco Aquatic Center.
The Panthers will visit Topeka for the Kansas Classic Nov. 18-20 at the Capitol Federal Natatorium, while select swimmers will compete at the Toyota U.S. Open in Greensboro, N.C. to wrap up swim competition for the fall. UNI divers will finish the semester in Iowa City at the Hawkeye Diving Invite on Dec. 1-2.
The purple and gold return to action on Jan. 13-14 for a senior day dual with Illinois State. UNI returns to the road a week later as the Panthers face off against both Iowa State and West Virginia at the Beyer Pool in Ames on Jan. 21. The Panthers conclude regular season competition during the first weekend of February as divers compete in the Omaha Diving Invite, and swimmers return to Sioux Falls for the Coyote Invite Feb. 3-4.
For the second consecutive year and fourth time in six seasons, UNI will play host to the MVC Championships as the meet returns to the Campus Recreation and Wellness Center on the University of Iowa campus. NCAA Diving Zones will be held March 6-9 in Minneapolis, Minn., while the NCAA Championships head to Knoxville, Tenn. from March 15-18.
"We're very excited to get back to competing, especially with the unique opportunities our meet schedule presents," said head swimming and diving coach Nick Lakin, who enters his 6th season at the helm of the program. "Between the first ever MVC Showcase, taking swimmers to the U.S. Open Championships for the first time, and having two diving exclusive invites, we believe there are tons of great situations for our student-athletes to thrive this season."
The Panthers posted an impressive season in 2021-22, with several student-athletes climbing the program's All-Time Top-10 rankings. UNI finished the 2021-22 season with an 11-4 record in dual meets, while also taking 5th place at the MVC Championships.
