CEDAR FALLS, Iowa - UNI women's golfer Mariah Nuss was among just 10 student-athletes honored this spring by the Missouri Valley Conference for the work she has done in her community.
In an effort to honor the achievements of exceptional student-athletes, the Missouri Valley Conference has created the State Farm MVC Good Neighbor Award. Ten student-athletes have been named by Commissioner Jeff Jackson as the honorees for the 2022 spring season.
Nuss is a senior on the women's golf team and earned spots on the Dean's List, Athletic Director's Honor Roll and the MVC Honor Roll.
She was involved in numerous community service projects: Lights in the Park, Vacation Bible School, AAU volleyball coach, Champions Approach Camp, Little Cougar Golf Camp, pitching coach, God's Work Our Hands, Hillcrest BINGO Helper, Halloween Truck or Treat/Drive Up, UNI Lock-In Advisor, MLK Day volunteer, Dance Marathon dancer and volunteer at NewAldaya Lifescapes.
She has helped organizations by making and serving waffles and omelets at fundraisers, creating videos for groups and serving as a speaker.
Nuss is the daughter of Tom and Wendy Nuss and is from Sumner, Iowa. She is majoring in athletic training.
In order to be eligible for the award, the student-athlete must be in good academic standing, must demonstrate good citizenship through good sportsmanship and significant community service, and must participate in a sport, during the season of recognition. The Valley recognizes 10 student-athletes three times annually (fall, winter, spring), for a total of 30 honorees. Institutions select their State Farm MVC Good Neighbor Award honorees.
This year's spring honorees from other schools are: Connor O'Brien, Bradley, Baseball; Pur Biel, Drake, Men's Track and Field; Mackenzie McFeron, Evansville, Softball; Rachel Hickey, Illinois State, Women's Track and Field; Cassandra Thomerson, Indiana State, Softball; Lorenza Martinez, Loyola, Women's Golf; Calandra Henry, Missouri State, Women's Track and Field; Matisen Ingle, Southern Illinois, Women's Track and Field; Michelle Pierce, Valparaiso, Women's Track & Field.
