DES MOINES, Iowa — Isaiah Trousil earned his first collegiate Drake Relays title with a win in the 200-meter dash today.
In 2018, Trousil was second in the 200 at the Drake Relays. In high school, he won four Drake titles, but this was his first win at the prestigious event as a Panther. He tied his outdoor season best with a time of 20.73 seconds. Teammate Parker Kiewiet took broze in a time of 20.94 seconds.
It's the first individual title for a Panther since Brandon Carnes won the 100-meter dash in 2017.
Trousil has the opportunity to be the first Panther since Joey Woody in 1994 to win an individual title in two different events. Trousil also qualified for the 100-meter dash with the second fastest time. He will compete in that event tomorrow at 1:30 p.m. CT.
The women's 4x100 qualified for tomorrow's finals with the team's fastest run so far this season. Rylan Santi, Jill Bennett, Libby Wedewer and Paishence Johnson combined for a time of 45.67 seconds and will compete again at 2:13 p.m. Saturday.
Former Panther standout and Paralympian Jessica Heims set a world record in discus. Heims, an Iowa native and UNI graduate, set a world record while competing during the university-college women's discus. The Cedar Rapids Prairie graduate threw 37.28 meters (122-4) to break the previous F64 paralympic mark of 36.53 meters (119-10) set by Poland's Faustyna Kotlowska in 2001.
Darius King pulled out of the university division for men's shot put to compete in the elite division tomorrow at 1:45 p.m.
Events at the Drake Relays get underway at 8 a.m. with the high school girls shuttle hurdle race. Field events begin at 10 a.m. with the women's special invite hammer throw.
