UNI softball vs. Indiana State
The Panthers will celebrate their seniors this weekend with three games scheduled with Indiana State. UNI will have four seniors graduating this year, outfielder/pinch runner Hannah Isley, outfielder Lydia Butters, pitcher Erica Oler, and infielder/pinch hitter Emma Valainis. Prior to Sunday's game against the Sycamores at noon, the Panthers will host a Senior Day program along with a comencement ceremony as UNI's formal graduation ceremony is during the MVC tournament next month. The Panthers will also hold a moment of silence on Sunday to honor recent collegiate athlete tragedies from mental health struggles and former UNI softball player KK (Micalla) Rettinger on the third anniversary of her sudden passing.Â
THE PANTHERS:
-Â UNI has tied the programs longest win streak with their 14th win in a row on Wednesday. The Panthers set a 14 win streak back in 2012 that was ended with a loss to #9 Missouri. UNI looks to make it a 15 game win streak on Saturday against Indiana State.Â
- Wednesday was the Panthers first game in a month without a home run. UNI has had a least one homer in every game since March 26 in a 10-0 win over Evansville. The Panthers came one home run shy of their game record against Iowa State on April 6 with five bombs in Ames.Â
- Freshman designated player/outfielder Mya Dodge is making history for UNI softball. On Thursday, April 28 Dodge was named one of 25 finalists for the 2022 Schutt Sports/NFCA Freshman of the Year award. She is the first Panther to be named to the finalist list since it began in 2014.Â
- It was another week and another weekly MVC honor for the Panthers. Catcher Emmy Wells earned her second Player of the Week award for games against Drake and Illinois State. Over the week Wells slashed .417/.500/.1.250 with two grand slams against the Redbirds.Â
THE SYCAMORES:
- Indiana State is having an almost .500 season with a winning non-conference portion of the season. So far the Sycamores are 9-12 in MVC play with wins over Evansville, Southern Illinois, Drake, Illinois State, Bradley, and Valparaiso.
-Â The Sycamores recently completed a series win over Evansville with a 12-4 win where ISU smacked four home runs. Two of those homers came from senior designated player Amanda Guercio who also hit two against the Aces in ISU's 16-3 win on April 20.
- Indiana State has shined against in-state schools this season. The Sycamores have won games over IUPUI, Butler, Purdue Fort Wayne, and MVC opponents Valparaiso and Evansville.
- Sycamores leading batter, senior right fielder Bella Peterson, is second in the country with 19 doubles in the 2022 season. Peterson became the all-time leader in doubles for a single season in 2021 with 19 and looks to break her own record in 2022.Â
