Hannah Bermel leads after day 1 at the Women's Golf MVC Championships

ST. LOUIS - Hannah Bermel topped the leaderboard at the Women's Golf MVC Championships after the first round.

UNI women's golf was in a four-way tie for third place with two Panthers in the top 20 after day 1 of the conference championships at the Greenbriar Hills Country Club. The tournament ends Tuesday.

Bermel carded a 73 in the opening round. Bermel led the field in par 5 scoring, shooting 1 under on two of the three holes for an average of 4.33. Bermel entered the championships ranked ninth in the league.

Madison Humke ended the first day tied for 19th place and carded a 78. Allison Nuss and Anna Jensen both carded a 79 to tie for 25th. Lily Bredemeier rounded out the team, carding a 92.

Temperatures on Sunday were in the low 50s, while golfers battled a steady rain, which started in the afternoon. Sunday's round featured one eagle as Kristen Giles of Drake did so on the par-5, 515-yard Hole No. 3. The final hole played the toughest, the par-4, 362-yard 18th hole. The easiest hole was Hole 9 (par-4, 300-yards).

Tomorrow's round is starting an hour later than originally scheduled. Play will resume 9 a.m. CT Monday.
