Panther softball finds offense in double header wins against Southern Illinois
3/19/2022 7:14:00 PM | Softball
CARBONDALE, Ill. -- UNI softball bats were roaring on Saturday with two wins against the Southern Illinois Salukis in a doubleheader matchup.
In what looked like a tale of two games, the Panthers were able to find runs in all sorts of different situations in two of three games in Carbondale. Despite being down by seven runs at the end of the second, UNI rallied back in the first game of the afternoon to take a 17-13 victory. It'd be a slightly different story in the second game as the Panthers would lead for five innings of play but had to defend against a Southern Illinois rally in the seventh to win 8-6.
Game 1 | W, 17-13
A seven-run sixth inning would be the key for UNI to win their first game of the day. After going up by one in the first, the Panthers would find themselves down by seven at the end of the second inning. In the second the Salukis made three unearned runs and had a three-run homer to have nine runs on seven hits.
But UNI wouldn't be deterred, slowly making their way back within striking distance of Southern Illinois in the third and fourth innings. The Panthers would close the gap to just two runs after a bases-loaded single, bases-loaded walk, a sacrifice fly, and Kamryn Shaffer's first home run of the season. The Salukis would extend their lead one in the fourth on a fielder's choice from their fifth batter of the inning.
UNI's offense would truly come together in the fifth and the sixth innings, bringing 10 runs home. Six hits between the two innings would come from DarynLamprecht, Mya Dodge, Taylor Hogan, and Shaffer, with her second home run of the day. Southern Illinois would tack on two runs in the bottom of the sixth but it wouldn't be enough to overcome the Panthers four-run lead. UNI would win the game using three pitchers, as reliever Hailey Sanders picked up the win after innings from Samantha Heyer and Erica Oler.
Game 2 | W, 8-6
It would be a much quieter start to the second game of the double-header as the first inning passed by uneventfully. For the second game in a row, the Panthers would score first as Kylee Sanders scored an unearned run in the top of the second after Lamprecht reached second base on an error. But in the bottom of the third, the Salukis would hit a two-run homer to grab the lead by one.
Southern Illinois wouldn't hold their one-run lead for long as Emmy Wells hit a solo home run to lead off the fourth inning. Three at-bats later, Lamprecht would again reach first on an error, sending Hogan home for run number four. The fifth and the sixth inning would be quiet but the Panther bats would explode again in the top of the seventh.
In the final inning of the game, UNI made five runs on five hits, including two separate home runs from Dodge and Madison Parks. The Panthers headed into the final half-inning of the game up by six and were met with a Saluki rally. Southern Illinois made two straight hits and picked up an error to send two runs home. After two quick outs for UNI, the Salukis had three more hits with an additional runner bringing the game within two. But a quick play from Kylee Sanders to Lamprecht at first would end the comeback, giving the Panthers the 8-6 win.
Pitcher Kailyn Packard pitched another complete game Saturday afternoon, facing 34 batters in seven innings. Packard would make seven strikeouts while in the circle while allowing six runs and eight hits. Three different UNI batters would have a multi-hit game as Dodge, Sammy Moss, and Hogan all had two hits. Kylee Sanders would be the only Panther runner to make it home twice over seven innings.
UP NEXT:
UNI will close out the three-game series with Southern Illinois on Sunday afternoon. First pitch is set for noon from Charlotte West Stadium as the Panthers look to sweep the season series.
