MVC Indoor Track and Field Championships Day 1 Recap

CHICAGO, Ill. - UNI track and field's Isaiah Trousil took down an MVC record set in 1990 and Darius King earned all-conference honors in the opening day of the Missouri Valley Conference Championships.Â
King entered the weekend ranked seventh in the Valley for weight throw and threw with a season best toss of 19.48 meters to earn a third-place finish.
In the men's 200-meter dash Trousil broke the MVC record set in 1990 by Drake's Kevin Little. His finish in 20.99 seconds was also a facility record and UNI record, breaking Brandon Carnes' mark of 21.03 seconds set in 2017. Teammates Tayshaun Cooper and Parker Kiewiet also qualified for the 200-meter dash final with a personal best time from Kiewiet of 21.53 seconds and Cooper with a season's best time of 21.57 seconds.
Blair Brooks and Drew Bartels took fifth and seventh in the men's long jump, while Aaron Sobush took eighth in the pole vault. UNI's distance medley relay finished in 10:21.34 with the team of Bowen Gryp, Tate Hookham, Craig Becker and Karson Kleve.
On the women's side in the distance medley relay, the Panthers took fourth in 12:18.59 with the combination of Paige Holub, Ainsley Schlicher, Auriona Kimbrough and Jill Vonnahme. Â
UNI had two Panthers place in the women's weight throw with Mari Shavers in seventh with a throw of 18.57 meters and Marin Ehler in eighth with a throw of 17.72 meters. In the pole vault, Cierra Laux earned the team five points with her season best jump of 3.81 meters to take fourth. In the 800-meter run,Â
Lydia Berns-Schwiengruber took sixth place in the pentathlon with a score of 3,094 points. Amanda Lietz also set a personal best in the pentathlon with a point total of 2,665 to finish in 11th place.
In all, the Panthers qualified 18 athletes for tomorrow's finals.
In addition to the 200-meter dash, Trousil and Cooper also qualified in the 60-meter dash with season best times of 6.72 seconds and 6.78 seconds, respectively.
Jack Sumners and Drew Bartels secured spots in the 60-meter-hurdles with Sumner's time of 8.13 seconds and Bartels' new personal best time of 8.09 seconds. Zack Butcher will be competing in the 400-meter-dash finals with his time of 49.54 seconds. In the 800-meter run, Seb Gearhart punched his ticket to tomorrow with a time of 1:53.92 alongside Drake Hanson and his time of 1:54.52. Brady Griebel will compete in the mile final tomorrow with his qualifying time of 4:17.04.Â
For the women, seven qualifications moved forward. Freshman sprinter Paishence Johnson set a personal best time in the 60-meter dash with a time of 7.53 seconds in the semifinals and set a personal best in the 200-meter dash with a time of 24.83 seconds. Rylan Santi posted a season best time of 7.68 seconds to join Johnson in the 60-meter dash. Emily Vos secured a spot in the finals in the 200-meter dash with her time of 24.80 seconds. In the 60-meter hurdles, freshman hurdler Paige Kisley advanced with her time of 8.93 seconds.Â
Sophia Jungling and Katie Nimrod quaflified in the 800-meter run in 2:16.93 seconds and 2:18.16 seconds, respectively.
In the men's heptathlon, Carter Morton led the Panthers after four events. Morton's highest place is in the men's high jump, where he took second to teammate Matt Davis' height of 2.01 meters. Davis sits fourth behind Morton with a point total of 2,888. Freshman Drew Bartels is in fifth with a total of 2,865 and a first-place finish in the long jump with a distance of 7.17 meters. Zack Butcher and Parker Kiewiet round out the Panthers with their point totals of 2,862 and 2,029 respectively. The heptathlon will continue at 9:30 a.m. Monday morning, beginning with the 60-meter-hurdles. Â
On the women's side the Panthers were in seventh place with 15 points, and the men were in fifth place with 17 points, scoring through six and five events, respectively.Â
The Panthers return tomorrow to finish the final day of the Missouri Valley Conference 2022 Indoor Track and Field Championships.
