CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- It was a tough fight on the second day of the Niner Invitational for the UNI softball team.
The Panthers would go 0-2 for the second day in a row while in Charlotte, playing RV/RV Minnesota and RV Charlotte. UNI would be shutout in the first game of the day by the Gophers and get within one run of the host team 49ers during the afternoon.
UNI vs. Minnesota | L, 0-3
It would be a quick game against the Gophers as it remained a pitcher's duel for most of the game. But a three-run third inning for Minnesota would be enough to grab the victory of the Panthers for the second day in a row. A groundout would start the third inning after two frames of three-up three-down ball. But the Gopher's next three batters would all reach base, with a double to center field sending in the first run. An error from second base two at-bats later would bring in the final two unearned runs to secure the Minnesota win.
UNI ended the game with three hits and one walk. Hits during the game came from right fielder Sammy Moss and two hits from left fielder Kamryn Shaffer. Starting pitcher Kailyn Packard had a complete game giving up one earned run on three hits with nine strikeouts.Â
UNI vs. Charlotte | L, 3-4
The Panthers would find their offense in the second game of the day, getting out to an early two to nothing lead in the top of the first. A lead-off single from Mya Dodge to second would become a quick out but Madison Parks would walk two at-bats later. Parks would quickly steal second base and get brought in on a long single by Emmy Wells. After reaching base, Wells would also steal second thanks to a wild pitch from 49ers starting pitcher Karyana Mitchell. Shaffer would single in UNI's next at-bat, getting Wells home for the Panthers second run of the afternoon.
But Charlotte would respond in the bottom of the first, as first baseman Kourtney Gremillion hit a three-run shot to right field. UNI would get out of the inning quickly with a strikeout and a fly out to right field. The Panthers would be able to respond immediately in the top of the second as second baseman Taylor Hogan singled to bring in leadoff batter Kylee Sanders. The three-run tie would stay intact until the bottom of the fourth when the 49er's catcher walked with the bases loaded, bringing in their fourth and final run of the afternoon. UNI had a chance to tie in the top of the seventh as lead-off hitter Addison McElrath reached second on an error, Hannah Isley came in to pinch run but the Panthers next three batters would go 0-3.Â
Along with the three runs, UNI had seven hits from seven different batters, three RBIs, and three walks. Starting pitcher Kaylyn Jones would pitch the first two innings in her collegiate debut, giving up three runs, three hits, and making three strikeouts. Reliever Samantha Heyer would be credited with the loss as she pitched the last five innings for one run, two hits, and no strikeouts.Â
