CEDAR FALLS, Iowa -- UNI softball closed out the annual Doc Halverson UNI-Dome Classic with a close loss against in-state rival Iowa State.
It was a fight to the finish in the finale of the Doc Halverson UNI-Dome Classic as the Panthers and Cyclones battled through seven. Iowa State would come out on top after a two inning rally by UNI in the sixth and seventh would come two runs short of winning. The Panthers ended the tournament with a record of 2-2-0 to begin the 2022 season.
The first two innings of the matchup between the Panthers and the Cyclones would be fairly quiet with only four runners reaching base between the two teams. But the Iowa State bats would come alive in the top of the third as a grand slam off starting pitcher Hailey Sanders brought in four runs. The Cyclones would also add two hits in the inning before the Panthers would end the offensive streak with an out from second to first. Iowa State would add one more run during the game at the top of the fourth on a solo shot from their third batter.
UNI would get their first hit of the game in the bottom of the fourth with a leadoff single from Emmy Wells. Wells would be left on base in the fourth as the next three batters would either strikeout or be putout at first. The Panther rally began in the sixth inning as Madison Parks and Mya Dodge would be walked on the first two at bats. After a strikeout on Wells, Kamryn Shaffer would step up to the plate and hit a ground rule double, sending Parks home for UNI's first run. A strong single out to center field by Taylor Hogan would bring Dodge and Shaffer home, bringing the Panther lead up to three.
A walk for Sammy Moss followed by two strikeouts would end the productive offensive inning for UNI. Samantha Heyer would come in to close out the game in the top of the seventh, dealing one strike and one fly out to keep Iowa State at five. The Panthers would get a strong start to the bottom of the seventh as Kylee Sanders singled on a hit to left field.
Sanders would then advance two second on a ground out by Parks. Dodge would follow up with a double to center field, sending Sanders home for her second run of the season. But the rally would fall just shy as Wells flew out to right field and Shaffer struck out swinging. UNI ended the game with four runs, five hits and no errors. Offensive stats were spread evenly among the Panther lineup while Hogan recorded the most putouts with five followed closely by Daryn Lamprecht with four. Starting pitcher Hailey Sanders would get her first loss of the young season on four innings pitched, giving up five runs, four hits, and four walks.
NOTES:
The Panthers get a week off before traveling to Tennessee for a single game with the Tennessee Tech Golden Eagles on Wednesday Feb. 23 at 3 p.m. UNI will then travel on to Charlotte, N.C. for the Niner Invitational hosted by the Charlotte 49ers. The Panthers will again play five games in three days at the weekend tournament facing off against former MVC rival Wichita State, Minnesota, and Charlotte.
