UNI softball drops both games in first day of the Niner Invitational

CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- The UNI softball team kept it close but eventually fell to both teams it faced on the first day of the Niner Invitational.
After two weeks off from action due to a rainout earlier this week, the Panthers were back in action in Charlotte for the Niner Invitational hosted by the Charlotte 49ers. Despite staying in both games, UNI dropped contests against RV Wichita State and RV/RV Minnesota at Sue M. Daughtridge Stadium.
UNI vs. RV Wichita State | L, 5-9
The Panthers would get the early start on offense Friday morning as third baseman Brooke Snider hit a home run to left-center field in her first at-bat of the day during the second inning. Second baseman Taylor Hogan would be brought in on Snider's home run as well having singled earlier in the half-inning. But the Shockers answered quickly, putting up six runs in their half of the second including two runs scored on an error by starting pitcher Kailyn Packard. A grand slam later in the inning by Wichita State center fielder Addison Barnard would extend the Shocker lead to four.
UNI would gain a run back their next time at-bat in the top of the third. Leadoff batter Madison Parks would hit a single to left and proceed to steal second base in the next at-bat. She would then move to third as designated hitter Mya Dodge grounded out to short. Parks would then make her way home on a wild pitch to give the Panthers their third run of the game. It'd be a quiet fourth while the UNI bats got going again in the fifth.
A leadoff walk for right fielder Sammy Moss set up a fielder's choice for Parks to reach base. Two at-bats later catcher Emmy Wells would hit a two-run shot to left field, putting the Panthers within one. But a three-run bottom of the fifth for the Shockers would seal the Panthers fate as their right fielder hit the home run that brought three in. UNI would end the game with a batting average of 0.200 and a fielding average of 0.720
UNI vs. RV/RV Minnesota | L, 4-5
UNI would get a 30-minute break in between games before getting back on the field to face the Gophers. A leadoff single for Minnesota led to their first scoring play of the day as their third batter hit a home run to bring in two. The Gophers would then grow their lead to five in the top of the second as a double in Minnesota's third at-bat of the inning sent in a third run. A home run a batter later to bring the lead up to five would prompt a pitching change for the Panthers.
Starting pitcher Hailey Sanders would be replaced with pitcher Samantha Heyer, who would close out the rest of the game. UNI would get their first run of the game a half-inning later as Kylee Sanders made it home on a passed ball after reaching base on a single during her at-bat and making it to second on a fielding error. Two more runs would be added on in the next inning when Parks homered, bringing in herself and Hogan.
It would be a quiet game for the next few innings as both teams would get batters on base but couldn't find the juice to bring them in. Until third baseman Brooke Snider would hit a leadoff home run in the bottom of the seventh, making it a one-run game. But the next three UNI batters would either be put out or struck out, giving the Gophers the 5-4 edge.
