UNI men's basketball picks up 92-65 MVC win over Valparaiso

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa --- UNI men's basketball led from the opening tip to the final horn on Wednesday night as the Panthers picked up a convincing 92-65 win over the Valparaiso Beacons at the McLeod Center.
The Panthers improve to 6-7 on the season and 2-1 in Missouri Valley Conference (MVC) play, while the Beacons fall to 8-7 and 1-2 in the league. UNI's 27-point margin of victory against Valparaiso is tied for the 6th largest in program history against an MVC opponent.
Jumping out to an early 8-0 run in the first two minutes of play, the UNI offense clicked with a season-high 59% field goal percentage from the floor. The Panthers also made 11 three-point field goals in the third 90-point game of the season.
Forcing 18 turnovers, UNI dominated Valparaiso with 22 points scored off of takeaways, with the Panther bench outscoring the opponent 29-10. UNI attacked the paint regularly, establishing a strong presence in a game that saw the home offense outscore Valparaiso 48-14 in the paint.
Four Panthers scored in double-digit figures, led by a 20-point performance from Noah Carter, who tied his season-high with 20 points in his second start of the season. Trae Berhow notched 17 points with 5 three-pointers, while Tytan Anderson posted a career-high 12 points, as well as new high-water marks for made field goals (6) and field goal attempts (7). Nate Heise recorded 10 points for UNI in the win, with Berhow and Anderson leading the Panthers with 6 rebounds each.

- The Panthers are 4-0 this season when shooting 50% or better from the field. UNI is also undefeated when the offense scores 90+ points.
- UNI's 27-point win was the largest margin of victory over the Beacons since Feb. 24, 1990, when the Panthers defeated Valparaiso on the road by 28 points.
- UNI improves to 17-1 at home all-time against Valparaiso. The program's only home loss to the Beacons came last season in a doubleheader split at the McLeod Center.
- The Panthers are 7-2 against the Beacons since Valparaiso joined the MVC in 2017.
- UNI's two MVC wins this season against Evansville and Valparaiso are the two largest margins of victory in a conference game this season by any team in the MVC. The Panthers defeated Evansville by 22 points on Jan. 2.
- AJ Green sits one-point shy of 1,400 on his career. The junior guard is also four points from moving into 9th on the program's all-time scoring list.
- Trae Berhow's 17 points against Valparaiso moved him up to 37th on UNI's career scoring list with 1,037 points scored since joining the Panther program in 2018 from Pepperdine.
- Austin Phyfe is 68 points from passing his father Steve Phyfe on the program's all-time scoring list. Steve Phyfe, a member of UNI's first-ever NCAA Tournament team in 1990, scored 912 points for the Panthers from 1987-90.
- Tywhon Pickford scored his 700th career point on Wednesday night, becoming the 82nd player in UNI men's basketball history to do so.
- Noah Carter surpassed Mike Pijanowski (1981-84) for 104th on the all-time scoring list.
