Panther Softball Fall to Salukis in MVC Championship

EVANSVILLE, Indiana – The UNI softball team played in the MVC Championship game against Southern Illinois on Saturday afternoon, the Panthers fell to the Salukis 2-0.
MVC Championship | UNI 0, SIU 2
The two top pitchers in the Missouri Valley Conference went head to head in UNI's Kailyn Packard and SIU's Sarah Harness. The two pitchers went 4 scoreless innings before the Salukis hit a solo homerun in the 5th to take the lead. The Panthers were unable to respond and the Salukis added another solo homerun in 6th.
Adara Opiola and Kamryn Shaffer recorded the only hits of the game for the Panthers. Kailyn Packard pitched all 7 innings, surrendering 2 runs and 6 hits. Packard faced 29 batters and recorded 5 strikeouts.
The Panthers have made 7 Gateway/MVC Championship games, winning in 1990 (Gateway) and in 2013 (MVC). Saturday's championship game marked head coach Ryan Jacobs 4th championship game (2013, 2017, 2019, 2021). Redshirt seniors Sammey Bunch and Adara Opiola played in 3 championship games in their 5 year careers.
UNI's Taylor Hogan was named the Elite 17 Award winner. The award is given to the student athlete with the highest GPA playing the championship game. Hogan has a 3.98 GPA in Communication Disorders.
Three Panthers were named to the MVC All-Tournament Team with Kailyn Packard, Adara Opiola and Hannah Kelley.
