Panthers Sweep Evansville

Cedar Falls, Iowa – UNI softball finished 3-0 on the weekend, taking down Purple Aces of Evansville 9-1 on Saturday, April 3rd. UNI now has an overall record of 15-13 and 6-3 in the Missouri Valley Conference. The Panthers recorded nine runs, on six hits, with no errors.
UNI 9, Evansville 1
The Purple Aces started on the scoreboard first scoring their lone run of the game in the top of the first inning. UNI would try to answer but would leave one runner on second base in the bottom half. The Panther bats started rolling in the bottom half of the second inning when Kamryn Shaffer hit a leadoff solo home run to tie the game at 1-1. Later in the inning Adara Opiola hit a four-run grand slam to push the Panthers in front by a score of 5-1. UNI would continue to tack more runs on the board including three runs in the third inning and one in the fifth to give them their third win of the weekend, all coming in just five innings played.
In the circle, Sophomore ace Kailyn Packard continued her dominance by throwing a complete game and picking up the win. Packard now has ten wins and five losses on the season. Packard went five innings giving up only two hits, one run, one earned, walked three and struck out three.
On the offensive side the Panthers found a spark from Sophomore Kamryn Shaffer, who went 2-3 with one home run, two hits, and one RBI. Senior Adara Opiola also contributed with one home run, it being the grand slam that would give the Panthers the lift they needed. Senior Sammey Bunch was also intentionally walked in all three of her plate appearances but scored one run.

The Panthers are back in action Apr. 10-11 when they will host Valparaiso in a three game weekend series at Robinson – Dresser Sports Complex. One game being played on Saturday with the start times of 11:00 am CT, followed by two games on Sunday at 11:00 am and 1:30 pm CT. Games can be watched on ESPN+.
