UNI Opens Season Against Cardinal Stritch, UW Milwaukee

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa – The UNI women's tennis team kicks off the 2021 spring season in Milwaukee, Wis. this weekend as it takes on Cardinal Stritch on Friday at 2:00 p.m. at the North Shore Elite Tennis Club. On Saturday, UNI clashes with UW Milwaukee at 1:00 p.m. at the River Glen Elite Sports Club.

UNI returns seven players headed by a strong senior class composed of Morganne Borsh, Valentina Caro, Madeline Doherty, and Harri Proudfoot. Also returning is junior Olivia Fain, and sophomores Emma Carr and Thaissa Moreira. Joining the Panthers this season is freshman Issa Sullivan.

The Panthers went 3-8 (0-0 MVC) last season, defeating Ferris State, 5-2, on Feb. 15, and sweeping Gustavus Adolphus, 7-0, on Feb. 22. UNI capped the season with a 7-0 sweep of St. Thomas on March 7.

Last Time Against Cardinal Stritch
UNI last met with Cardinal Stritch on Feb. 23, 2018, where they posted a 5-2 road win over the Wolves. Gisela Kemper/Claudia Toledo and Harri Proudfoot/Valentina Caro clinched the doubles point with wins on the No. 1 and No. 2 courts. Kemper, Toledo, Proudfoot, and Savanna Hunt notched singles victories on the No. 1, No. 2, No. 3 and No. 5 courts, respectively.

Scouting Cardinal Stritch
Cardinal Stritch is 0-1 (0-0 CCAC) after opening the season on Jan. 30 against Milwaukee with a 6-1 loss to the Panthers. Senior Lisa Keller picked up the Wolves' sole point over Milwaukee from the No. 1 court.

The Wolves went 1-5 last season, posting a sweep over Judson University.

Last Time Against Milwaukee
UNI fell, 4-3, to Milwaukee last season on Feb. 23 in Waterloo. Kim Zizek, Moreira, and Caro picked up singles wins on the No. 3, No. 5, and No. 6 courts, defeating their opponents in two sets each, but fell just short of Milwaukee's lead.

Scouting Milwaukee
Milwaukee is 1-1 (0-0 Horizon League) on the season. Starting with a 6-1 victory over Cardinal Stritch on Jan. 30, Milwaukee fell to Marquette, 5-2, on Feb. 6. Leading the team so far this season with 2-0 records in singles play is freshman Greta Carbone and senior Anna Daniel Fuentes.

Last season, Milwaukee went 7-6 (0-0 Horizon League), notching 7-0 sweeps over Cardinal Stritch and Western Illinois. They also posted wins over Valparaiso, Chicago State, UNI, and Wisconsin Whitewater.
