AMES, Iowa - The Panthers will face their toughest test yet on Sunday afternoon as they head to Ames to take on the #15 Iowa State Cyclones. The Cyclones lead the series against the Panthers 37-9 and are 18-1 at Hilton Coliseum. The Panthers lone win at Hilton Coliseum was during UNI's most recent visit to Ames in 2019, grabbing a 71-63 victory. The game is also a family affair as UNI assistant coach Steven Fennelly is the youngest son of Iowa State Head Coach Bill Fennelly.Â
THE PANTHERS:
-Â Monday evening the Panthers set several program records against Graceland University. The Panthers set a new program scoring record with 110 points, a new program assists record with 30 assists in a game, and the largest scoring margin at +76.Â
- The Panthers currently lead the Missouri Valley Conference in 5 separate statistical categories including assist turnover ratio, scoring margin, three-point field goal percentage, turnover margin, and turnovers per game.
- UNI is 7th in the nation among Division 1 schools with an assist turnover ratio of 1.45. The current Division 1 leader in the assist turnover ratio category is Tulsa at 1.70.Â
- Freshman guard Maya McDermott set a new career-high in field goal shots attempted on Monday night. McDermott's previous high was 9 shots attempted against Evansville in February of 2021. McDermott's new career-high is 12 attempted field goals. McDermott is also 15th in the nation for assist turnover ratio with 3.12.Â
THE CYCLONES:
- Iowa State is looking to complete a sweep of in-state Division 1 opponents on Sunday against the Panthers for the first time since 2013-2014. The Cyclones beat Drake on November 18th and Iowa on December 8th.
- The Cyclones snapped a 5-game losing streak against the Iowa Hawkeyes with their 77-70 win against the 12th ranked Hawks Wednesday evening. The Hawkeyes hold a slight edge in the annual Iowa Corn Cy-Hawk Meeting, 29-23.
- Iowa State is led by a sister duo in Ashley Joens and Aubrey Joens who average 20.8 and 13.2 points respectively. The Iowa City natives are one of only two sister duos to help lead their team in scoring, with Fresno State twins Hanna and Haley Cavinder being the other.Â
