Panthers Fall to the Sycamores 3-1

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa - Despite scoring first, the Panther women's soccer team wasn't able to hold off a comeback by the Indiana State Sycamores.
While UNI got off to a quick start against the Indiana State Sycamores, the early control of the Panthers wouldn't last through 90 minutes Saturday afternoon at UNI Soccer Field. The Panthers scored first in the 11th minute of the game when forward Ashley Harrington was able to sneak a shot past Sycamore goalkeeper Maddie Alexander thanks to a pass from forward Sophia Doty. The goal was Harrington's 3rd of the season and Doty's second assist.
The Sycamores were able to tie up the game in the 39th minute when Indiana State forward Sasha Thompson got a shot behind Panthers goalkeeper Caitlin Richards on the left side. The Panthers would get the last shot of the half but the teams went into halftime tied 1-1. To start the second half Indiana State got an early goal in the 51st minute as midfielder CeCe Wahlberg got her 4th goal of the season.Â
Indiana State would put the nail in the coffin for the Panthers in the 61st minute when Richards came out of the net to block the first shot attempt, but wasn't able to get back in time to block the rebound from Thompson. Thompson's goal was her second of the game and 3rd of the season. UNI would only get one more shot on goal in the second half during the 78th minute from forward Johnnie Hill.
As a team the Panthers were able to get 1 goal,, 1 assist, 10 shots, and 8 shots on goal. UNI's 80% shot accuracy during Saturday's game was their second highest shot-on-goal accuracy this season.
Individually for the Panthers Lauren Heinsch led the way with 3 shots and 2 on goal. Johnnie Hill also had a multiple shot on goal game with both of her shots landing on net. Other offensive contributors on Saturday included Ashley Harrington, Sophia Doty, Lily Caso, Allison Whitaker, and Kennedy Riken. Starting goalkeeper Caitlin Richards played 65 minutes, made 1 save, and allowed 3 goals. Goalkeeper Chloe Russo finished the game for the Panthers with 1 save and 24 minutes played.

The Panthers go back on the road next week to travel to Missouri State and Valparaiso. UNI will take on the Lady Bears Wednesday, October 13th at 1 p.m.Â
