SPRINGFIELD, Missouri – It may have been a rainy day at the Allison South Stadium but the Panthers pushed through the weather to grab a 2-0 win from the Missouri State Bears.
With rain coming down throughout the day it was a slow start to the game for both teams. UNI got their first shot of the game in the 13th minute when Lauren Heinsch shot high on goalkeeper Katherine Montgomery shortly after the Bears got the first shot of the game. The Panthers would get the first shot on goal in the 17th minute when Sophia Doty put a shot towards the bottom center that was saved by Montgomery. In the 27th minute, Heinsch had a breakaway down the left side that ended in a block from Montgomery coming out of her line. The teams would go into the second half scoreless.
The Panthers started the second half with a bang scoring their first goal of the game in the 49th minute. Defender Sandra Thiman scored her first of the season off a corner kick by Siri Ott making the score 1-0. UNI kept the pressure on the Bears, taking 4 shots within 2 minutes. The Panthers would then stretch the lead to 2 in the 63rd minute when Ashley Harrington took a long shot outside the penalty box that went in right above Montgomery.
It would become a chippy game following the second goal as the Bears were assessed a yellow card and the Panthers took a foul inside the penalty box for a penalty kick. Goalkeeper Chloe Russo blocked the initial penalty kick while the Bears attempt at a deflection went wide of the net. The Bears would make a late-game push, putting two shots on goal in the last 4 minutes of the game. But Chloe Russo was able to secure the shutout with two saves.
As a team, the Panthers had 2 goals and 2 assists, took 17 shots with 6 landing on goal and had 4 corner kicks. Individually it was a very balanced offensive attack for UNI. Of the 14 players in scoring positions, 9 players had at least one shot through 90 minutes.
Both Lauren Heinsch and Ashley Harrington had 4 shot attempts with 1 of those attempts being on goal. Forward Sophia Doty also had a multiple shot day with 3 shots through 48 minutes. Goalkeeper Chloe Russo recorded her second shutout of the season Wednesday afternoon with 5 saves on 10 shot attempts.
